We had a race engine and a race transmission for our 1965 Mustang vintage racer. Time to install them.
As long as the radiator isn’t in the car, it is relatively easy to install the drivetrain into an early Mustang from above. Having the front of the car jacked up and a floor jack underneath to catch the transmission’s tail shaft makes this job even easier. And the shifter should be removed.
The headers are bolted in after the engine is in place and come up from underneath the car. Before we bolted down our engine mounts, we made sure the headers fit. Lifting the engine an inch or so makes installation much easier.
We used Cobra Automotive pinned engine mounts. These are stock mounts that are pinned together for motorsports applications. The forces of racing will separate a standard Mustang mount. Budget about $150 for these engine and transmission mounts.
