Enjoying the Ride

Is a million-dollar car Grassroots Motorsports? Who cares: We got to spend all day looking at this automotive treasure. (By the way, our car has the same steering wheel.)

Why so few updates on our 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera lately? Because that car has just been humming along. However, a properly running Porsche has allowed us to play a bit, and that’s been one of the plusses about that car: entry into the Porsche Club of America.

Even though Daytona Beach, more or less our hometown, doesn’t have its own PCA chapter, we fall between two big ones, Space Coast (Melbourne) and Citrus Region (Orlando). Crown Region is based just north of us in Jacksonville.

This means that we have a ton of local events, from club races and autocrosses to chili cook-offs and social events. Brumos Porsche, located in Jacksonville, regularly hosts events. When they received the latest Boxster, the dealer held an open house, featuring a Q&A with Hurley Haywood and Patrick Long. Bill Warner, founder of the Amelia Island Concours, acted as emcee.

Lately we took our Porsche to two social events, a shop open house at Aerodynamics (no web, but call them at 386-871-7096) as well as a garage tour. In both cases, we pretty much got one-on-one time with some amazing cars, including the Porsche IROC that Emerson Fittipaldi drove during the 1974 season. The car recently traded hands for nearly a million dollars, and its restoration has since been refined by Aerodynamics.

Does this mean that the work is done? No. Even though the project car series wraps up with the May issue, we still have some things to do. We have some suspension upgrades planned, and we need to get the car on the dyno.
