New Magnetic Numbers

Update by Alan Cesar to the Subaru Impreza WRX project car
Feb 21, 2014

These magnetic numbers and letters were clearly too big.
Thankfully, Solo Performance Specialists were willing to replace them with a full set in a smaller size.
The last trick was finding a place to store them. The nice thing about magnets is that they stick to metal things.

For Xmas, I (your Online Editor Alan Cesar—pardon me while I temporarily depart from our usual editorial “we”) received a wonderful gift from my wife: New magnetics for the WRX, ordered from Solo Performance Specialties. She did say, though, that a full set would’ve been quite pricey, so she only got enough for one side. Once applied, I found out why: These were 12-inch numbers and letters. I had told her that size based on my memory of the 24 Hours of LeMons rules, not considering that those are much larger than what I’d had on my autocross Miata. I had also assumed she’d buy an autocross numbers package rather than going straight to the page with custom magnetics.

These were obviously way too big, especially the class letters. I called SPS expecting to hear a “They’re custom, you’re boned.” message. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised that the man who answered, Dave, would gladly exchange them for a full set of numbers in the proper size, color, outline and font. The cost came out about the same, so rather than ask me to pay the dollar or so difference, Dave waived it. I packed my numbers up, mailed them out, and they shipped my replacements as soon as they received the originals.

I was astounded at their commitment to customer service. It’s not every day you find a company that treats its customers so well. It’s also not common to have a wife thoughtful enough to buy you autocross magnetics. Remember: If you’re dropping hints about a gift, it helps if you provide specifics.
