The 818 Gets Wrapped

Update by Ed Higginbotham to the Factory Five 818 project car
Jul 23, 2014

You have to go fast before you worry about looking good. We had finally reached the point where we were fairly satisfied with the performance and reliability of our Factory Five 818. We had taken it to an autocross and drove it around town for a week without any issues. Now it was time to turn to the exterior. It was white and boring. Obviously this was a huge problem so we contacted VisionX Graphics and asked for their help. They gave us some design ideas but we quickly figured out that practically zero color schemes agree with the lines on an 818. With that in mind, we ended up creating something that looked a little similar to the Factory Five 818 prototype.

We dropped the car off at VisionX and they started their wrapping process. The car has to be completely cleaned with alcohol before the vinyl can be applied. It turns out that July is pretty much the worst time of year to wrap a car since it is so hot and humid. The vinyl becomes softer and wants expand and contract on its own. Rusty Abadie and the rest of the VisionX crew soldiered on and completed the project with just a few minor headaches.

The main color is the first to be applied, then the accents are added. In our case, the car was wrapped in red vinyl, then white, black and other graphics were added on top.

The wrap turned out great. As you may know from past articles, we are fans of a good vinyl wrap. It’s definitely an easier and less time consuming process than prepping and painting a car. The finished product doesn’t look half bad, either.
