1970 Triumph GT6

My wife wanted a Triumph Spitfire with a hard top. I showed her some pictures of a GT6 Coupe, based on the Spitfire and she started looking for one online. She found the 2 owner 70 GT6 in NC. The previous owner had the car since 1978 and working with her father rebuilt most of it, including the engine. She was career Army and was away for most of the 90’s but when she retired a few years ago she decided it was time to sell the car. We decided this was the one after a number of calls and eMails pulled an all nighter the week before Thanksgiving 2008. The car barely fit on my trailer, the tire rack was designed to work with a convertible, but by letting the air out of the tires we made it fit. Since the car has arrived in NY, my kids have named it Mel, short for Mellon due to it’s color, shape and interior colors. We’ve rebuild the back axles, including the Rotoflex coupling (British engineering at it’s worse), brakes, electrical switches, horn, wiper motor, weatherstripping and various sundry items that get lazy and won’t work after 10 years in a barn. My wife replaced some upholstery and I put in a modern sound system. The new wheels, Minilite style, arrived from England this week and will be on in time for spring. The next bit of work is a paint refresh and maybe a header.
