Is the C8 the best Chevrolet Corvette ever made? Track test and data review. | Video

https://www.youtube.com/embed/mKmlbiynUDE

Did moving the engine from the front of the Corvette to the middle make it extraordinary or just extra ordinary?

We track-test the C8 at the Florida International Rally & Motorsport Park to find out what the data says. Presented by CRC Industries.

I got to ride in one at Sebring last October for six laps.  It was quite an experience.  The level of grip and braking from a Z51 C8 is definitely extraordinary.

I haven't tracked mine. Coming from an f80 M3 I'm very impressed with it.

How about that interior? Definitely not as dour and grayscale as most cars from the past 20 years.

A customer has one. I haven't gotten to drive it yet but it's supercar level performance for 1/4 the cost.

I'm not convinced Corvettes have really gotten faster since the C6 Z06. I think a lightly modified NA C6 Z06 with sticky tires would be faster around a circuit (and more durable) than either a C7 or a C8, H-pattern transmission and all.

Wait. Comparing a "lightly modified with sticky tired" marquee vette (z06) around a circuit against a stock base level c7 or c8 and using it as justification that corvettes havent gotten any faster?

In fairness, in that chart there's a 4 second delta between a C6 Z06 and a C8 Z51. I'd guess two of those seconds are due to tires.

I’d be willing to bet that a C8 w/Z51 package could get around most tracks quicker than a C6 Z06 with someone like Randy Pobst, Andy Pilgrim, or Johnny O’Connell driving both cars.

Sounds like a great future article to me as well!

Yea but..... You are talking about the marquee model versus a base version. Do you think the C6ZO6 is going to be able to smell the tailpipes of a C8ZO6 even if you slap hoosiers on the c6? Corvettes, and cars in generally, have gotten absolutely SILLY lately in terms of speed. Anyone that thinks we have gone backwards hasn't been to many track events lately in my humble opinion.

From what I understand, so far buyers have been paying $50k~$100k over sticker to actually get one of these, so for now it's supercar level performance for 2/3 the cost.

A 2010 ZO6 had a starting msrp of $74,285 before options were added. A trip to Ye Olde Inflation Calculator shows that to be equal to $93,143 today

A C8 Z51 MSRP is just over $66k.

So a friend is Chief Driving Instructor at the Fellows school and both he and a another friend who instructs there have said the C8 is the easiest car to drive fast they have ever driven. They are both very experienced racers.

Yeah this is an entirely defensible position.

Although I'm thinking they maybe need to try an NSX and a Veloster N and get back to me.

I think one of them has driven both versions of NSX.  Additionaly another friend, who's been to  Lincoln with his Vette as well as running F-mod,  just said "wow" in reference to driving the new C8 around Spring Mtn.

I think there's no question you get more for your money with a C8 Z51 than a C6 Z06 in it's day 15 years ago.

It seems clear the C8 puts the power down better at lower speeds. They also made the 6.2l in the C8 perform like the 7.0l from 15 years ago. The C6 Z06 accelerates faster at higher speeds due to a power to weight advantage.

In the handling department, I'm not sure if they've advanced the state of the art as much. (I'm saying this from an armchair perspective)  It would be interesting to see a similar data trace comparison here to the C6 Z06. I suspect the C8 is more civilized than the C6 Z06, but I'm not sure in the base/Z51 they've obtained more handling capabilities. That said, maybe they're close to the theoretical limits of what a reasonable street car suspension setup can do at the track. Perhaps the C8 suspension/chassis is achieving a similar result with the burden of an extra 500lbs and greater civility?
