Do you participate in autocross?

Do you organize autocross events?

Do you dream of one day doing either of the above?

If you answered yes to any of the above, then check out the interview that we did with Roger Johnson. Who’s he? He is the most prolific course designer in Tire Rack SCCA Solo Nationals history and literally wrote the book on course design. His autocross courses are legendary: fun, challenging and thrilling yet not gimmicky.

He recently spent nearly an hour and 45 minutes discussing the fine art of autocross course design with us, and that interview is preserved for all eternity below. Topics discussed include:

How to design a course from start to finish.

Designing a course that will thrill both novice and experienced drivers.

Avoiding common autocross course mistakes.

Overcoming small and weird lots.

Learning how to read a course as a driver.

If you'd like to experience one of his courses in person - he's apparently designing the course for the New England Region's August 20th autocross. FYI.

Thanks for the video, fascinating stuff.

That should be cool. Yeah, before last night's talk, for whatever reason I didn't picturing him designing courses for other groups and regions.

I have run his courses at Nationals. They're not gimmicky or weird. You cross the finish line and are like, Damn, that was a great course.
