Hurricane Harvey: Hoping for the Best and Doing What We Can to Minimize the Worst

Thanks to our Florida base, more than once the GRM staff has faced the fury of a hurricane. Some storms zigged at the last minute, some delivered glancing blows, and some knocked us for a loop. No matter the outcome, it’s a stressful, agonizing situation. We’ve been lucky that, by and large, our property damages have been relatively minimal over the years.

This weekend we have watched the photos and videos from the Texas coast and see heartbreak and, yes, hope–people working together to overcome adversity. We have friends, family, staff and readers in the area. At this point, all we can do is hope that everyone makes it through unscathed and with minimal properly losses.

If you’re in the area and would like to check in with the rest of the group, we invite you to do so.

Some of us on staff have already donated to the Red Cross. Brock Yates Jr., a good friend of ours, turned us on to Team Rubicon. While we don’t have a formal matching policy, we’re rewarding any assistance given with as much good karma as we can muster.

Be safe, everyone, and thanks again for being part of our community.

I just heard today that my cousin Tom is headed to the Houston area to help out with the recovery. He's a captain in the Hutto TX fire department. I guess a bunch of guys from his outfit are headed down there to help.

Good luck and best wishes to all. It's a mess, and the worst isn't over yet.

And anyone local who wants to help, please don't just drive around, go to your local fire department. They're doing a great job staging help and sending people out where needed.

We've been extremely lucky. We're crossing our fingers for the next couple of days and then it will be time to help everyone pick up the pieces. The Coast Guard has been flying back and forth over the house all afternoon.
