Citing a period of “careful evaluation,” Mazda has chosen IMSA as the sanctioning body for the 2021 Global Mazda MX-5 Cup Series.
Even though a schedule for the series has yet to be announced, the release hints that the MX-5 Cup may run alongside some familiar favorites already on the IMSA calendar: “IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship enthusiasts are familiar with the Mazda brand through our success in the top level DPi prototype class. Adding the Global Mazda MX-5 Cup Series to the IMSA event schedule will allow those fans to gain a deeper understanding of the brand.”

IRVINE, Calif. (Oct. 15, 2020) – After careful evaluation, Mazda Motorsports has selected the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) as the sanctioning body partner for the 2021 Global Mazda MX-5 Cup Series.
For Mazda, our core mission is to uplift people, and one of the ways we do that is through motorsports. Our long term alliance with IMSA has proven we share enthusiasm for sportscar racing and commitment to uplift our teams and fans. IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship enthusiasts are familiar with the Mazda brand through our success in the top level DPi prototype class. Adding the Global Mazda MX-5 Cup Series to the IMSA event schedule will allow those fans to gain a deeper understanding of the brand.
In the near future, Mazda and IMSA will announce the race schedule for the 2021 season. The final race of the 2020 season will not be impacted by this announcement. This race will be held in St. Petersburg, Florida with INDYCAR from October 23-25.
