While competing in–and finishing–the Nürburgring 24 Hours can be equated to climbing a mountain, Hyundai is also interested in conquering a more literal mountain: Pikes Peak.

Hyundai, which hopes to secure a fourth Nürburgring 24 class win this weekend with a field of three Elantra N TCR-spec race cars, unveiled its latest EV racer, the Ioniq 5 N TA Spec.

In this case, the “TA” stands for Time Attack, which hints at the model’s mission: The TA Spec has been “specially equipped” to compete in the upcoming 2024 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

More specifically, Hyundai managed to get 37 more horsepower out of the production Ioniq 5 N powertrain by tuning the software of the rear motor, raising the total output to over 670 horsepower.

In addition to adjustable dampers, the car also gets “motorsport-spec” brakes comprised of six-piston-front and four-piston-rear calipers fitted with upgraded pads.

Connecting everything to the road is a set of 18-inch forged wheels wrapped in Yokohama Advan 005 tires.

As a way to enhance driver feedback and replace the sirens typical of electric Pikes Peak race cars, explains Hyundai, the Ioniq 5 N’s N Active Sound+ system has been boosted to over 120 dB with the help of modified speakers.

The TA Spec makes up two of the four cars–two TA Spec cars and two production Ioniq 5 Ns–Hyundai has entered into the 2024 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

Four-time Pikes Peak winner Robin Shute and Hyundai WRC driver Dani Sordo will pilot the TA Spec cars, with 11-time Pikes Peak winner Paul Dallenbach and Ron Zaras, formerly of Hoonigan, will drive the Ioniq 5 N production models.

The TA spec car is required to run 120db external speakers (for worker safety) that Hyundai will use to showcase the Ioniq 5's synthetic drivetrain noises. But, as I asked in the press conference "Your synthetic engine sounds are cool and all, but if you have access to a 120db sound system, why NOT Slayer?"

That front splitter is gigantic!

Hyundai is doing super cool things these days. They seem like a true enthusiast brand now. We just did a 1200 mile round trip in our Ioniq 6 and it was fantastic. Such a wonderful car.

That's a horny looking Hyundai. I'd love to know how many of those body mods are for aero and how many are for style - the opening on the back of the front fenders, for example.

A four car team is a serious effort. They cap the drivers at 85 or so, so Hyundai is a non-trivial percentage of the field.
