OH MY GOSH! I have really been jonesing for a ramp truck recently.
The truck we found needed some TLC, but it was almost exactly what we wanted.
We found an original 1973 Ford F-350 Camper Special that had been modified into a ramp truck when new.
We had seen this old Chevy ramp truck at Monterey and thought it would be a cool way to transport either our LeMons Miata or our old TR3.
We had seen some cool vintage ramp trucks at Monterey a couple years ago and couldn’t get them out of our head. How cool would it be to find one of these forlorn old car carriers, buy it cheap, and equip it with everything you’d need at the track?
With a setup like this, we could keep everything from our helmet to our tire gauge in the truck. And when it’s time to hit the track, just throw the race car on the back and go.
After watching a few good examples of these trucks sell for upwards of $25,000 on eBay Motors, we figured something like this might be beyond our reach.
During a recent visit to Cobra Automotive in Wallingford, Connecticut, proprietor Curt Vogt told us there was a 1973 Ford F-350 ramp truck for sale nearby. He asked if we might like to take a look. Would we? Heck yes!
What we found wedged into an old barn was an original Ford F-350 Camper Special that had been modified into a ramp truck when new.
The original owner had bought it for his classic car business. It still even had its original paint and interior, and just 50,000 original miles. The asking price was $3000, which quickly turned into $2500.
And just like that, project ramp truck was born!
