Not my best weekend behind the wheel, but the novice I coached took second in novice class...and beat me by a 10th of a second. Take 'em where I can get 'em.

We encountered lots of “winning” this weekend with our Garage Rescue Miata, enjoying two days of mild weather at the Central Florida Region SCCA's autocross on Daytona International Speedway’s kart track–fun stuff that, in its own right, could also be called a win.
Some of the weekend’s other big wins:
Big win: Introducing a friend to the sport. What’s better than seeing that big smile after a ride-along and hearing that they felt safe and included at the event? Welcome, you’re now in the club. You’ll soon be issued, at your choosing, a Miata, Corvette or BRZ.

Big win: Watching Chuck Sample’s return to autocross. Sample is a legend in the world of autocross: C Street Prepared champion at the first-ever SCCA Solo Nationals (1983), SCCA Driver Of Eminence (1992) and, along with his wife Jeanette, SCCA Solo Cup winner (2000). And then in 2004, at the age of 67, he took the SCCA’s A Modified national title. After stepping away from competition soon after that A Mod win, he joined us this weekend in his EV Kia.

Big win: Working with the novices who can’t contain their excitement. If you’re ever feeling jaded about the sport, go work with first-timers. Their enthusiasm for autocross is just infectious. Two of this weekend’s novices were rallycrossers who decided to autocross in order to check out “the other side” of the SCCA.

Big win: Hanging with old friends and making some new ones.

Big win: Seeing competitors get together to help someone who’s encountered a mechanical issue. When one of our competitors blew a differential, by the time the car was pushed back to grid, he had offers for both a co-drive and a tow home.

Big win: Two dudes co-driving a racing-beige, W123-chassis Mercedes-Benz–240D with a stick shift–and smiling the entire time. Car looked seriously clean, too.

Big win: First trophy in a while. (Okay, really, it was just a two-car class this weekend with the turbo Miatas staying home, but we’ll take it.)
