I am so excited to see this car run at Daytona.
We debuted our VW Fox endurance racer at Barber Motorsports Park with, uh, mixed results. Some would say we retired the car early, while others would skip that euphemism and say the wheel fell off. Either way, our debut in the 24 Hours of Lemons wasn’t a total success.
Relive the drama/excitement/whatever here:
However, there was a bright spot at Barber: We finally had a car that seemed to fit in with the rest of the oddball Lemons field, something that really had potential to be a perfect fit for the series. With a few more weekends of work and some focus on our strategy, we might just have a real contender on our hands and some Lemons trophies in our future.
Of course, fate had other ideas. After the coronavirus pandemic canceled our planned return to the 24 Hours of Lemons, we were forced to hang up our helmets and sit on the sidelines for months while we waited for the world to reopen.
Strangely, though the coronavirus canceled our plans, it also caused a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to pop up. Skimming our emails one morning, we saw something surprising: The TireRack.com ChampCar Endurance Series would be coming to our home track–Daytona International Speedway–on July 5. We did a double-take and spat out our coffee, since that weekend at Daytona was already taken… by IMSA! The sanctioning body had already announced a July 4 race at Daytona, meaning IMSA would be the opener for ChampCar. (That's how this works, right?)
This presented a dilemma: We didn’t have a car that would be competitive in ChampCar, but we did have an opportunity to say we were racing at the IMSA weekend and sharing the paddock with some of the greatest names in motorsports. And after a quick call with the team, we made our decision: It might be the worst idea we’d ever had, but we were getting on track at Daytona, and we were doing it in the Fox. Could we really rub shoulders with the likes of Porsche’s factory racing effort in a car the Volkswagen Group would probably rather forget it ever built? Let’s find out!
Of course, that means we’ve got our work cut out for us. Time to fix the Fox, sticker it up like a real ChampCar, and hit the high banks.
No lie, it makes me smile every time I see it. The in-car footage combined with the front wing (Fwing? Fring?) makes it look like you're driving it backwards at full speed.

2020, you so crazy.
When you showed me this picture and said "Do you want to run this at Daytona" you hadn't photoshopped the Fox in yet and now I have some issues.

Probably not all of it but we'll try to at least do some. Maybe I'll see if I can get mic'd up for my stint.
Just so you guys know, tech does not allow front wings in champcar. Not sure why, but they don't (although it's not in the rulebook).
You better check with them or have a plan if they say nein.
The Fox has a 92.8 inch wheelbase
A NA Miata has a 89.2 inch wheelbase
You are 3.6 inches and a rusty Miata away from GREATNESS.
Just sayin'.
BTW, I am not knocking the car in any way. Thank you for running it and the reports!

Yeah, they don't make sense at Daytona, anyway. We're kicking around other ideas. We definitely need better mirrors for Daytona.
