For the automotive world, the race track is one of the best proving grounds.
To prove that diesel engines could be just as competitive as gasoline engines, Cummins took one of its JT-600 truck engines, lightly modified it, mounted it sideways in a Kurtis-Kraft body, and then showed up to race at the 1952 Indianapolis 500.
The innovative car would then go on to set a lap speed record of a little over 139 mph in its first qualifying run.
