That looks like one hell of a shop. Where is the Hong hideout generally located again?

I've been some level of active on this forum for many years and I still don't really understand the Hong Norr team. They're like some kind of automotove A-Team but dirtier and from the South (I think).

Nearest I can tell, the Hongs are exactly that. They all bring something to the table and they're like the avengers of E36 M3ty car racing, except with death metal and beer. They also seem to know EVERYONE.

Mike, you can also upload photos right to the message board--no outside hosting necessary.

And doesn't that have a similar engine as the Vette? So it should perform better than a stock vette on sticky tires.
No wonder you got FTD.
What? The car started at 3850. We removed 800 lbs. You still salty that your only claim to challenge fame is an FTD from 15 years ago where we beat you raw?
Fladiver64 said:I have to admit that one of our guys asked the question when they saw the car is "How did they build that for $2k?" The simple answer I gave him was go ask, sure enough he came bak 10 min later with the story. There was never any thoughts that someone was cheating, it was more like amassment in what you guys accomplished.
PLEASE ask! I was happy to talk to anyone who asked!
slowbird said:Not gonna lie, up until about a week ago I thought the Hong Norr team was made up of one guy named Hong Norr.
I always like to think there is another branch, located farther south that goes by the moniker Hong Süd.
wvumtnbkr said:Well, there is Hong norrth.
We are not those guys. Not that there's any bad blood with those guys; just don't want to claim any credit for all the awesome E36 M3 they've accomplished. We the OG's tho #dreamteam since '04.

Good to know! I'm hongtarded. Surprised you didn't know that.

My brother, Matt lives in Tampa. He has a garage at AMP (close to me) It is a nice garage that we are lucky to make use of. You're welcome to visit! Bring your helmet and your checkbook for the kart track. I don't suck, for a fat guy.

I want to hear all about the suspension setup.
I've got the V1 little brother with the 3.6L, 6spd manual, and LSD that my wife and I occasionally autocross. I'm sure some of the setup should carry over
Just a set of lowering springs, only to get the car below monster-truck stance after removing 800 lbs. Check the "check-in" thread where Chuck replaced the front struts. We noted, while putting the springs in that neither front nor rear were factory GM. Especially the rear, where we were worried the factory Nivomat struts would "self level" back to monster truck height.
You can see the car bouncing on the drag launch in the video. Obviously not ideal, but there just wasn't any room in the budget for suspension.
I autocrossed my DD 05 V in stock trim on all-seasons in chattanooga a couple times (with Noelle...of GRM fame) and it DID NOT SUCK, to the point where I immediately started shopping for a spare set of wheels/tires, but the 6-lug-thug is not a 1st gen crx in that regard.
Short of saying go nuts on coilovers & swaybars & tires, I can't help ya. Like I said, we didn't even align the car.
Andy Neuman said:In my opinion it's still a packaged deal because he wouldn't of let the car go without buying the other "$1800" in parts. What parts did you end up buying for $1800?
The written rules and the allowed interpretation of said rules should be updated so newer contestants aren't confused by why packaged parts breakdowns are allowed. We have allowed it and it is ok.
Still think packaged deal breakdown is a slippery slope. Yes, I'll buy that fancy pen you picked up at the bank for $2000 and give you $1 for the car.
BUSTED! It was box of 1800 pens at a dollar a crack. Chuck is a travelling pen salesman.
#JOKES
Factory dual-mass clutch, NIB factory cats, a couple boxes of plugs, a spare wheel, etc. it's in the budget. I'll put in the build thread.

Indeed. It is admirable.

Ending at 3000lb makes the car no longer heavy. Freaking incredible that you found that much to take out. Theoretically, you now have a platform for a rather unusual CP car. If you run the car a second year, it would be interesting to see how much faster the car would be on slicks- watching the autocross runs suggests that you are not too far short on spring rates.
While I sometimes think of doing a challenge car, no, I don't miss it.
In reply to poopshovel again :
Stock clutches do suck for drag racing, even my 15 mustang was overheating the clutch and slipping after a bunch of runs.
1800 pens good deal
In reply to Lof8 - Andy :
Which is why I think it would be very close to be correct for some Avon or Hoosier slicks, which is the going tire for CP.
A CTS-V is in CP, and it's min weight is 3000lb, w/o driver. This car is now 3080. And if I see the pictures I've seen, the car is very much legal in prep to CP. (which is to say, more could be done, and plates of metal could be put in the middle floor if so desired).
One of the things that always interested me in the Challenge are cars that can be legally used in some SCCA class, and how good it would be. Over the many years I've not come, ideas I've though about have been a legal CSP Miata, DP Miata or Alfa, and DM Miata, Alfa, or Fiat X1/9. But the goal is to be under $2000 (not including tires) and be capable of getting a trophy at nationals. This is a great start for a CP car that is both unusual and cheap.
That thinking goes back to the original $1500 challenge- which was supposed to point out to readers that big bucks were not required to go racing. And to do that, you have to meet some class rules for some rule making body. In this case, the SCCA is a pretty obvious choice.
Is the CTS-V in CP? I think they frown on IRS there.
It's a bad idea to start bugging you about parting it out, right? Almost as bad an idea as swapping a 300k mile Caddy drivetrain into an S197...
In reply to DILYSI Dave :
Well, it's in the 2019 Rule book that the CTS-V is in CP. And interestingly enough, unlike some other P classes, CP does not have a weight alteration for live axle or not.
Here's all of GM cars in CP:
General Motors (Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Oldsmobile, & Pontiac)
Chevelle, El Camino, Tempest, etc. (A-body) (1964-67)
Chevelle, Cutlass, El Camino, GTO, etc. (A-body) (1968-72)
CTS & CTS-V (2003-07)
LeMans, Cutlass, Chevelle, El Camino, etc. (A-Body) (1973-77)
Malibu, Cutlass, El Camino, etc. (A-body) (1978-81)
Monte Carlo, Grand Prix, Regal, El Camino, etc. (A-body)(1982-88)
S10, S15, & Sonoma (6-cyl) (1982-93)
S10 & Sonoma (6-cyl) (1994-04)
I personally loved your car. I always look for the ones that make me question how that can that be done for that price. Your car was one of them, and when I asked I was satisfied that it was legit. I have done that at every challenge, and I have always questioned myself as to why I didn't think of this or that when it came to ideas and the opportunities. If and when I come up to someone and I ask those pointed questions... I always want to make sure that they know I am not questioning their integrity, but instead trying to learn how to do our craft better.
One of my consistent frustrations is that folks are all nice to your face and attack you on the keyboard.
You guys did a great job!!
