It's a manual. In the last 12 years of constant escort ownership, they have all been manuals. I've actually only driven one auto escort, that was my uncles and I drove that less than 50 miles.

There are plenty of cheap escorts around, but most of them are rusting bad, and the rear shock towers are letting go. That, or the idiots on craiglist never reply to emails. I've not had one call back or email back yet, and I've probably emailed or called on 20.

It's really simple and straight forward to put a manual in. I just put a manual in my otherwise automatic BG Protege. In fact the shift linkage in mine now was out of a 1999 Escort wagon. An afternoon at my local self service junkyard got me a low mileage transmission for $90.
