EDIT: Just remembered, it's Kotter, not Cotter... I can't get anything right...
What if we did a Challenge class where the Hive chose what car you bought for the Challenge?
Here's how it works. Let's say we have five Forum members (me being one of them) who commit to the subclass and announce that on the forum on a given Monday. The forum gets one week (until the following Monday) to nominate potential candidates from CL, FB, etc. within 50 miles of that zip code. The buyer (me) selects three finalists no later than the next day. The forum votes on Wednesday on those three finalists. The volunteer (me) then has to buy the finalist car with the most votes on the forum.
Yeah, it's complicated and it's possible the car might sell too soon. But it certainly might make for an interesting Challenge entry and ought to rate BIG cool points with the forum...
Just an idea. It'll never happen.
Here's where I think that it would fall short outside of 2-3 entries (who likely would already be showing up). People don't like to be told what to purchase or what to work on.
On the other hand they have less difficulty being told what to drive. I don't expect there to be a single additional BG chassis car entered this coming year, unless I get Corin and his wife down, or unless I enter a second one, but jumping behind the wheel of one to turn some autocross runs is fun.
This gets to my key party class concept. You build and bring what you want, but you won't know what you're driving in competition until you get down there and pull the key to it blindly out of a basket.
It also works is your suddenly teammates with an entire another team in addition to your own. Then when you look over a vehicle that you're driving you also see a notice things that maybe different than how you would have done. Not necessarily worse, and sometimes definitely better but often different. This encourages the picking of the brains of the other team as to why they did something, And how they came up with the thought process to do something prior to it rearing its head. It really helps with the creative thinking and thought process of approaching builds to gain the perspective from others by experiencing something they've put together.

there are a handful of people who "build" challenge cars whose creations i would never get behind the wheel of

The why on that matters though.
Is it because they're bland and boring to you, like this is just a $2000 car off craigslist or marketplace, it's slow, not engaging to me and boring.
Or is it because there's other questionable aspects to them.
This seriously matters (and can be communicated without naming names/cars or builds).
I know, for example, that there are builds that I'd have extreme difficulties in getting in or out of in a comfortable or timely fashion, that wouldn't be a concern for others.

Questionable to beyond questionable fabircation and safety concerns. Most cars are fine but several i have cringed and a few i was afraid for my life working the course while they ran
