I was pretty impressed by one that came to an autocross at PIR a few years ago. Must have been well-driven...

Big pos! Wife had one when we first met, all sorts of issues and she takes care of her cars. Worst one was plastic timing belt pulley / tensioner that shattered taking out the whole top end.

I think the slightly bigger engine from a Suzuki Forenza swaps into these pretty easily.

Yeah, but you can go 15k on an oil change and turn the oil into black putty and after you run it on kerosene for a while, it will still be fine...

I wouldn't want anything to do with one, but it was always entertaining watching the Sprongls beat some pretty serious hardware with an almost stock one in the Canadian rally championship.

Well, the Yugo has a fair amount of pedigree in some roundabout ways, its basically a short wheelbase Fiat 128, and Enzo Ferrari liked the 128 enough to DD it. The engine is designed by Lampredi, the Fiat-Lancia twin cam dude. The transmission uses Porsche split ring synchronizers on the 3/4 gate. And its built by Communists to keep things entertaining. The Aveo is just a Korean crapcan and a E36 M3ty one(not a ~02+ KIA/Hyundai) at that, as discussed below.

I did quite a bit of research into the Aveo when it came out, as I was in the market for a crap-can at the time. It's actually quite similar to the older VW Golfs - particularly in suspension design. Unfortunately, there was absolutely zero quality aftermarket/performance suspension components available for these at that time. I haven't looked since within a year or so after they were released though.

hmmmm might make the car slightly better....assuming it can be done

they have no personality whatsoever. zero driving dynamics. the overwhelming theme of the car is unresponsiveness. it's so bad you half expect even the headlights to come on after a 5 second delay.
