I've seen 2 in the flesh. Ever.
My first big automotive mistake was one just like that. Still dead in the backyard as a reminder to not be such an idiot. I did love how it drove for the very short time that it drove.
If I remember right, these were actually pretty reliable in the most basic definition of the word.
They'll get you home. You might not have any lights, your radio might be stuck on the factory weatherband station on full blast, and your memory power seat jamming you into the dash, but you'll get there.
The engine is one of the more reliable parts of the car. It's weak in the massively underpowered for the weight of the vehicle sense but an engine swap would do approximately nothing to make it more reliable.

This is accurate. Mine ran and drove fine with almost zero oil pressure for the year and a half that I owned it. Almost nothing else worked, but it started and drove well even with large structural parts falling off.

I want one to daily drive.
Step 1: Remove EVERYTHING that doesn't make it run.
Step 2: Replace with manual things (windows/seats/locks). Everything that can't be replaced with a non-power equivalent, wire yourself from scratch. (Stereo, lights, wipers)
Step 3: Drive forever, feel like a badass

I like this idea. A lot.

So if its not the drivetrain, is it the nefarious lucas electrics, or the quality time and effort put into assembling it or??? I've always liked these but WAY to afraid of them to do more than dream from afar. Very far at that!
