A couple of days ago I heard $500, my mouth said "Deal!" before my brain could process this stupid idea.
That's the short version of how I bought a early 1970's GMC dump truck. I had never even been close to it, I had seen it across the field. I couldn't even go look at it, I had to get to the next job. It has a title. I know the guy I bought it from pretty good and it was for his business use.
I sent a text to AccordianFolder, he thought it was a good purchase. Then I called Pyro to tell her I "accidentally" bought a truck. A few days later we got to look at it for a few minutes. I though it was a 366 but sharp eyed Cousin_Eddie noticed it's a GMC V6 which I totally missed when I snapped the photos.
Its mostly complete, bed is rough, body is rough, needs tires and a serious date with a pressure washer. No clue if it runs yet, rear brakes supposedly stuck. I think its a 1974 due to the 8/73 date on the door sticker. Now you know almost as much as I do. I go back in a few days to get the title and tinker with it.
VIN is TCM62TV609411, trying to decode it this is as close as I got:
T - GMC
C - 96 or 106 Conventional Cab
M - Showed Gas V8 but its a V6?
6 - 2 Ton
2 - Body Style ?
T - GMC 50 thru 60 series
V - assembly plant GM Truck Pontiac
609411 - Build Number
If anyone has better info I would appreciate it.
I'll try to keep this thread updated but I'm not real great at daily updates.
Update -
The Good - Went to see if it would start, put a battery in, squirted gas in the carb vent tube to fill the bowl and it kicked over! Added some fresh gas and got it to run at 1/4 to 1/2 throttle, wont idle though.
The Bad -Phil said he may have to give my money back, he can't find the title. He is upset about it because, well, that's Phil. He's a good guy. I told him I would take it anyway, I mean if he can't find the title what else is he going to do?
This why he is upset, this was in the file (business file system, lots of files) it was supposed to be with the title:
So I have the build sheet. I told him to keep looking but I would take it anyway. No clue what Im going to do with though.
I typed out the build sheet since it's hard to read:

It's a 379 V6, made from 1959 to 1974. Great big one barrel carb. Came in either gas or diesel!
Can't Phil just apply for a new title then transfer it?
Never had it in his name, he didn't transfer it.
I would look at the laws in your state to see what provisions they have for such a circumstance, it may be very easy. In TN, as long as the VIN doesn't come up as stolen, the buyer of a vehicle without a title sends in a worksheet to the DMV with the VIN, date of purchase, and buyer's signature (doesn't require a bill of sale or any signatures of the seller) and gets a clean title in the mail 3 weeks later. I did this with my Ventura as i bought it from Alabama, which apparently does not require titles on vehicles of a certain age, so the title to my Ventura was lost long ago.
