The Colorado 3.5 and TB 4.2 are both GM Atlas engines.  I wonder if some oil pan cross-breeding would make a rear-sump 4.2 not so hard to achieve.  Yes it will require cutting and welding, and possibly some oil pump pickup fab as well.  But the pans should be the same width, and made from the same material, and maybe the oil pump pickup surgery could also be achieved with cutting and pasting of factory parts.

Ecotec 4 cyl would also be cool.

Drop a Cummins 4bt in it...

(said somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but it’d be wild...)

other good options- Ford 5.0, LS, 2jz, rb26, any of the Jap v-6’s from a ‘Yota or Nissan SUV...

lotsa room in there; sky’s the limit.

I think you missed the part about me wanting it to be economical at the pumps. lol I'm looking for a good comprimise of power and fuel milage. Pretty much all those engines don't make the economical requirment.

Neither does the 4.0...

I do like the idea of the Colorado 5-lunger though. That’d be a neat swap...

Heres a boring answer: 4.8 LS and the newest auto thats easy to control. The ecu for chevy v8s should be easy to swap over with help of a programmer, right?
