Well I just got an opportunity to fulfill a long dream...
My own personal machine shop.
Just got this today.
And picking up the lathe tomorrow....
Both need misc parts n pieces but that might make a nice build thread (I hope)
Oh yes, more info coming....pizza just got here, and still kinda examining it...
I wonder if we have some skilled machinists on this forum? I bet I will have tons of questions....I know there are forums for that, but a rather like it here:)
Heres what I know (or think I know) so far....
Its a running 1/2 hp mill with moving axis :)
I believe its an M model head retrofitted to some kind of horizontal mill as there is a set of gears under a cover in the top of the main casting
X axis moves great Y axis moves well enough but has an odd steel plate under it ( I assume to compensate for ply/ware) And the Z axis moves very well on the top half...
Its take brown and sharpe #7 tooling of which I have none, but thats were tomorrow's lathe comes into play..
Just got done doing some oiling and test running the motor.
Oh and it has equipment on it to traverse the X maybe Y also. But its currently disabled....
Oh 1 last thing...
I LOVE IT...LOL
There are a couple of guys on here with skills. There are also a few of us that have mills, but not skill. I have a mill, and a couple of lathes, but don't use them near enough to be skilled with them.
Machines like that really get you thinking like an Egyptian when its time to move them. I have an old Southbend lathe and a mill about the size of yours that I have moved too many times.
no, you know what skill is? using a flat piece of wood with rolled metal and rolling it across, that is great! I need to remember that in the future for odd shaped heavy things.

I cant take credit for that..I have been lucky enough to work with some highly skilled (older) journeyman electricians over the years...those guys know some tricks
My jealousy abounds. I have the bed, tailstock, and drawbar headstock for a small benchtop lathe with V-profiled ways. I have no carriage or cross slide. There is no castings or badging of any kind, so its truly an orphan lathe. I have some aspirations to install a retrofitted carriage and cross-slide, and a 3 jaw chuck.
Im hoping to take away some insight into how to properly retrofit a machine tool as you go thru this rehab. Please post lots of pics!

I have been blowing up youtube getting ideas how to bring these machines back into full swing, so keep your fingers crossed for me..should be plenty O pics in the next few weeks...127 garage sale coming up soon...hope to run across some useful stuff there
Last night took a few parts apart and cleaned up the ways and lubed them up real nice..
Today I pulled the 3 phase mtr out and very crudely used the lathe to make 1/2" to 3/4" bushing to mount the pulley on the rinky dink temp mtr...
Then ordered this...
Hope to put the new mtr on it later this evening and test run the lathe:)
If you are planning a re-power, I strongly recommend looking at treadmill motors. I put a 2.5hp treadmill motor on my South Bend, and it was the best upgrade I have ever done.
This is the speed control I used.
Or you can pick up a cheap treadmill and strip it for parts.
Treadmill mtr....thats an interesting idea..yeah I will certainly need more power...this is a 1/3 hp...just to see everything move..after I got it reversed it was fine...hate when theres no wiring diagrams
Much to my amazement this showed up today!
Had to take about .040 off the inside of the bore to fit on my shaft...
Got it mounted now but I have some run out...I think when getting a new backing plate its supposed to get lightly turned/faced to run true...so next week I should have some new (cheap) tools/cutters coming by then I think I will trust myself enough to true it up...
Also stopped at century today and stumbled onto some metal to feed the lathe
Thanks toyman...I have been melting down the youtube servers the last few days, and thought I remembered seeing that
