Picked up this 2001 Audi TT last night for $1300. Runs and drives okay. My wife got a new job and doesn't want to drive her Boxster GTS there because of the bad roads so I figured this would be a fun car for her to drive there.

Seller said it needs a head gasket but I'm going to diagnose that further. It sputters when building boost but other than that it idles and drives fine. Doesn't seem to overheat. Let's see what I find as I unbox this thing.

Sputtering only in boost is likely ignition related. No codes? If you're not getting a code to narrow down which cyls then just crush all your plug gaps to .020" and see if it improves. If it does it's 100% ignition related.

Any pics of this thing?

Just pulled codes. Three are related to misfire so I'll tackle those first but it does seem to have a bit of coolant in the oil.

Damn. Why aren't my pics loading. Let's try this again.

I'd buy that for $1300 right now. Cool!

Yeah, these have really grown on me over the years. Cool.

Need to get the Corvette project off the lift before I dig into this one so I started poking around a bit. Found a nice surprise underneath. Some H&R Street Performance SS Coilovers.

Seems like a good find.  I see the secondary air code is there too.  Make sure all the lines for that are in good shape.  They are know to fall apart if I remember correctly.

They've always had excellent style, a real case of a show car escaping on to the streets.

Very cool. Been contemplating a Challenge or rallyx budget TT as of lately, they're definitely out there.

Yeah. A challenge build crossed my mind but my wife would kill me. I bought a SVO Mustang for that last year but haven't got to it.

TT is cool but do you have a build thread on the SVO?

I'd want to see the fuel trim % values but I'd throw a known good MAF on.  Plus 4 new coils.

Also check the large vacuum lines under the intake for leaks.

All common weak spots on the 1.8T

Not yet. I'm going to start one on the 87 corvette first since I need to get it out of the way. This one is mostly a restoration though. Not much going into it performance wise. Once I get that off the lift and get the TT head gasket replaced I'll start one on the SVO. Also have two other cars in line.  Lol.

With Secondary Air Injection codes, look for frayed, brittle & crumbling vacuum lines covered with a braided cloth.  Is it 3.5mm or 5mm?  Don't recall.  They used it to send actuating signals all over the place.  Why use electrons when vacuum is more analog Rube Goldberg?  Plan on replacing all of it.
