OK, so not really.... it's my new DD that is also going to be an STF car. Saturday, we drove 6 hours round trip to pick up a set of Kosei K1's 17x7.5 wrapped in 225/45/17 RE11's. Sunday I just had to slap them on the car:

Step 2 will be suspension work and I have a lot of work to do. Since there'sdiddly squat available, I'm going to start with measuring the stock parts and seeing what is available for it. Standard MacStrut front end and a torsion beam in the rear.

The rear coilsprings are 4.75" OD. Anyone know what the VW spring diameters are?

this is very relevant to my interests (and my DD) lol
I want to start autox-ing mine soon, not going to really build it up much though.
eagerly awaiting updates!
ps:
post it on forteforums and make their heads (and audi headlight mods, sweet kdm painted interior plastics, and super dope 19x9" 0 offset hideous wheels, explode!)=]

First auto-x Sunday, and a brand new thing we are calling the "Drag Cross" (think SCCA Pro-solo without the lights or convoluted bracketing). Pretty awesome. Pics:

Vids drag cross day:

38*, 20mph steady winds and spitting rain/sleet: http://s2.photobucket.com/user/bobnjenmill...e2d474.mp4.html

Autox day, about 50*, 10mph winds and by the last run it was sunny and nice. http://s2.photobucket.com/user/bobnjenmill...cfe62b.mp4.html

On Sat, the temps were extremely cold. I never ran in temp about 40*, and most of the time it was spitting rain/sleet at us with 25mph+ wind gusts. It was about as terrible of weather conditions as you could ask for to auto-x in. Tires are 6yo (date code '08) Bridgestone RE-11's that are pretty well worn. Corners on all 4 are round from a lack of camber by the previous owner, rear tires are about 1-2/32 of tread left, fronts are sitting at 4-ish. Rest of the car is 100% bone stock.

Launches were pointless, wheel spin from hell because of the cold and wet. Car got down the straight quickly, outrunning the 328i set up for STX I was lined up for on my 4 timed runs. First turn, on the first run the ass stepped out fast. Caught it and was more careful from that point forward. Inside tire spin was ridiculous. cold air=more betterer power and super cold tires meant grip was minimal. throttle modulation had to be carefully monitored. Second runs, I forgot to turn off the TCS. Launched, TCS killed power I started to watch the 328 pull away then remembered, reached down and turned it off before the shift to second. Caught the bimmer, made the rest of the run uneventful. Car pushed a little, but that was to be expected. There was ZERO grip. The only cars running fast were the Subies. Anything with torque or RWD was fubar'd. Still had fun, but wasn't much of a learning curve with such extreme conditions.

Sunday: This was our "Records Day" where the fastest car in the class sets the class record to be beat on the last event of the season. This was the important day for me because it will really showcase what differences have helped and how much faster the car (and driver) have gotten over the course of the season. I was the only car in STF, so beating others was not a priority. Temps were in the high 40's, low 50's and the sun was out with minimal wind. Grip was slowly getting to the "Acceptable but far from ideal" level, which was a huge improvement over the previous day's "slab of butter on a hot skillet".

Car was a little pushy out of the gate, got worse on the first run as the front tires got heat and grip. This is a familiar course as it's the permanet Test-n-tune course at that site, so getting adjusted to the course was not hard. After the run, I lowered the front tire pressure to 27 and pumped the rears to 35, and that is where I kept them as it seemed to be happiest there. This same course, I ran the Swift GT on Koni's, coilover's, RE-01R's and all 1790lbs of awesomeness to a mid-52 second time. My first run was a 52.8, second was a 52.1, dropped to a 51.5 on my last run.

Observations: In stock trim, the car is fairly neutral. It will snap the ass out when pushed, or tires are cold. push a little too much and it gets real pushy real fast. Throttle application is not like any of my other FWD auto-x'ers. Smash it and you are greated with wheelspin gallore, and leave it planted long enough you'll get smoke..... tire smoke. Body roll is pretty much kept in check, considerin the lack of a rear sway bar. The one thing it NEEDS more than anything is negative camber up front. This thing spent 80% of it's time on the outer 2" of tread on those tires.

This car reminds me most of the elantra. It can only handle one thing at a time. You can brake, OR turn, OR accelerate. Trying to any combination of those will result in a pushy, tire spinning beast. Be patient, and it is quick.

I can't WAIT for this thing to have a real suspension under it and the new Rival's.

Is that a wind sock in the second to last pic, or did you really take out a cone?

No, that's the sock at Grissom AFB. It stayed stuck straight out like that all day sat. 20mph winds, gusts over 25. It suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucked. But I was still glad to be out there.

K.... little update which isn't much of an update.

Ksport is dragging their feet. Apparently the Veloster/Forte/Elantra use the same suspension but the Elantra uses a unique tophat. They have the Elantra kits produced, ready to go but haven't got their act together to produce the tophats for hte Forte/Veloster.

I've contacted Megan Racing to see if they can sell just the tophat for the Forte kits, and then get Ksport to get me the rest of the setup with the correct springs/shocks and put two together.

God this is frustrating.

So you're saying Megan has a kit for your car, or no...? Why don't you get their complete kit instead of going bit by bit to finish the Ksport kit?

spring rates. The Megan's are only available with some super duper crappy 6k fr/4k rr springs and they offer no custom rates for the rears (which need to be in the 11-12k for my needs).I guess I could get 3 rear kits and find a way to put them all together?

Couldn't you buy springs with the rate you want and sell the others off? If they're new and unused, you wouldn't lose much money on the deal, I expect, and you'd have exactly what you wanted without much trouble. No idea how the dampers would like using double the rate they come with, of course.

That's the problem, no one makes the springs in the rates I want. If it was a normal macstrut car, wouldn't be a problem. But with this weird torsion beam/divorced spring in odd sizes crap it makes it more difficult.

That was what made it nice that I could get the Ksports in the right rates/shocks.

He's asking if you could get springs that would sit in place of the springs in the Megan kit.

The answer is: You can.

The longer answer is: You can, but then you're not valved for those rates.

The really long answer is: You can, but then you're not valved for those rates, so you send your coilover setup off to these guys, who them turn your entry-level Chinese coilovers into something awesome: http://www.rallyracingsuspension.com/page12.html

OK, Megan contacted me and got me a price for the tophats.... $75 each. Obviously I instantly emailed back asking how, where can I order them and will you please take my damn money?

installed. Amazing. I have disappointed all the "stancers" I work with because it's not "dumped". I currently have it about an inch lower than stock. Body roll is gone. Squat/Dive is no longer present in any form. Ride is stiff, but not too harsh. Large impacts hurt though....

Overall, I can't wait until next Sunday to try it out.

In reply to Bobzilla:

If you play with the compression settings, you can make large impacts pretty effin soft. My '91 is about the same as you describe right now, but I'm limited in ride quality by the koni yellow's valving.

You were right Paul. Backed them down 2 clicks and the ride was better. 2 more made it go back to "bouncy".

Dude. That car has the "perfect" stance. I can't believe how good that looks on the stock wheels. That's a cool bonus to having a good suspension under there, finally.

Once the correct tophats arrive it might come down another 1/2" all around.

I cheated, brought the rear and front down another 1/4", shortened the rear bump stop 1" and shortened/softened the rear shocks. Rides about like it did stock, but harsh impacts are still more noticable. Total is 1.25" up front, 1" rear.

Here she was right after the wash at lunch:

Compare that to "before" (holy front wheel gap batman!):
