Im not a huge fan of the current "ls swap the world " craze.
However, it has replaced the sbc for cheap running engines and readily available junkyard parts. Which means that it meets the ultimate criteria for this rebuild of cheap, easy, and plentiful parts and maintenance and repair.
Im not convinced that a stock 5.3 is the answer to super good lap tines, but its a great beginning, and supposedly a cam away from 450hp.
I say this having never owned an ls, and only driving them in base c5 corvettes and a 2001 suburban.
We'll see what its actually like soon, i hope.

"However, it has replaced the sbc for cheap running engines and readily available junkyard parts." which is truly amazing to the extent that you can throw a bump stick at these and see stupid HP's for little or next to nothing....still I miss a stout SBC and will always...
I saw this sticker awhile back and had to have it. Need one for the AMC.

Probably. Be interesting to see what i think of these to say the least!
Oh: here's what a $50 5.3 looks like. Theres moss growing on it in places.

This is the most GRM thing I've read this month.
Looks like it was covered, other than leaves, at some point in its life. Definitely more than $50.00 worth of stuff on it, if it becomes a boat anchor.
Way more than $50 in parts on it, great buy.

Unfortunately it appears to be full of water. Buy scrap metal guy said it came in the back of a truck he picked up for junk. He priced it to me and fifty bucks and I couldn't get my money out fast enough. I figured even if it's only good for the heads accessories intake oil pan and manifolds I've still
Tear it down, drain water out, wipe bores with scotchbrite, reassemble, earn mega concour points.
Tech inspector just left.
Spo hillclimb class, cage is legal! Needs gussets at all junctions, and two nascar bars need some more weld. They also requested to see more tie ins to the body at the roof, a pillar, b pillar, and the planned front tube frame.
They want a front mounted battery kill, externally accessible fire bottle pull, tow hooks both sides front and rear. No glass lights. Window nets both sides. All holes filled in firewall and floor. Steel in car fuel lines, steel in car brake lines. No steering column lock. Gt1 fuel cell ground clearance rules. Rese wheelwells need sealed to quarter panels. Fenders over the tires. Lexan or glass windshield. Nonflammable materials throughout preferred. Subframe connectors preferred due to rust im shell. Acrylic or open rear glass ok. Aero unlimited. Must meet noise regs. Weld up holes in rear cage tubes.
I have a plan, and will be getting a logbook!!!
That sounds like a remarkably do-able list

Yes it is!
In the grand scheme, no suprises, and some praise for the forethought and trying to go above and beyond the rules for safety.
Gussets caught me off guard, and the steel brake lines were a suprise. Nicopp is apparently not cool with them.
not hopeful about the internals. Hell, not hopeful about the heads!
However, incredibly simple engine to work on 45 minutes before work got me to here.
I had to know.
Its a bad sign when pushrods are rust welded to the rockers.

DO..........NOT............TOSS.........repeat
what's a little (alot) elbow grease and scotch brite and wire brushes and elbow grease?
That honestly doesn't look that bad for sitting in the elements. Well worth the $50 for a harness and accessories. Let me know if you need any help with LS stuff.
What happens if you immerse an entire engine in evaporust?

That one looks like it will mostly evaporate
In reply to Robbie (Forum Supporter) :
I'm sorry do you mean lightweight internals?

That has a nice ring to it!

Today's update.
$50 boat anchor torn down as far as im going. It seems ron is going to try to salvage it, and possibly trade me challenge stuff.
Untouchabl also brought me a wiper motor and linkage from one of the trackers. Its honestly so close to the amc i could drill some holes and mount it as is!
I also worked a deal for some sheet aluminum for the interior at $5 a sheet of 16ga. Should be perfect for my needs.
Time to push the amc back under the carport for a while. Put the cover on it, and finish the neon engine swap. Oh, and prep the miata for next season.
