This isn't likely to be a build thread as much as a story. There's very little the car needs for what I plan to do, basically drive it and giggle like an idiot. First, the thread title. Thanks to the NYS DMV, there are some issues getting it tagged. I called to tell a friend we wouldn't be taking it out this weekend and she dubbed it the World's Fastest Paperweight. It's sad but true for the time being.
It started out with a bad idea. My plan was to spend the summer getting my Monte Carlo put together and driving. Life, work, and depression stalled that out pretty badly. I wanted something I could use now when I was talking to a coworker who picked up an older 911 for less than I expected. I started looking too, and bid on a couple but wasn't as sold on them as I thought and they started climbing higher than I wanted to spend. Keep in mind too that very little thought went into this. I had a little money and it was the most spontaneous thing I've done in a long time.
I never looked at Corvettes as the C5 and C6 looked a little plain. Then I saw an ad. Somehow I'd forgotten there was an evil wide bodied C6. It looks a lot like the C6R, which looks fast sitting still. It was in my range, not perfect so I wouldn't feel bad using it, and appeared to be in pretty good shape. I decided I had to have it, made arrangements for my brother and I to fly to North Carolina to drive it home. The seller, Cody, disclosed all the issues he knew of, and a couple Corvette friends said none were to worrisome.
There were a few hiccups getting it and an afternoon wasted trying to get temp tags, but at about 5:00 on a Monday we headed north. The car ran perfect, and it was exactly what I hoped for. It's basically a thinly disguised race car. We filled the tank, had dinner and set out to go home. The first lesson, it's surprisingly easy to drive. Once I settled in everything was smooth, and in traffic it drove very well. Lesson two, once we cleared the city, is that it's far faster than anything I should be allowed to own. It accelerates in every gear, and never seems to stop. A kid on a sport bike slowed to look at it, then took off. We stayed right with him until my desire to stay employed kicked in.
"We stayed right with him until my desire to stay employed kicked in. " Wally ....good on you bro!!!!!!....get a (good) radar detector before any performance upgrades....(cuz you don't really need any....wink)....watch your mirrors......Congrats!!!! Are monks allowed to drive corvettes??
I'll join this one for the stories. Awesome.
It doesn't need to be registered to run a track day.

Pics from Thompson or Lime Rock or it didn't happen!
Man, I love me some C6 Z06. Yours looks killer with the dark tint and black wheels.

I could probably get to Lime Rock and back on the Lost Tag sign I'm using to get Ollie ice cream. (Possibly kidding of course if anyone from NYS is reading along)
The drive home was remarkably uneventful except that my brother wore most of four Mountain Dews and every time he tried to text his wife I made him drop his phone. We set the cruise control for most of Virginia and ended up with about 27 MPG making it a sensible hatchback should I start commuting in it.
We stopped for the night in Winchester VA. The plan was to drive straight through but there were way too many deer. We passed three cars that had struck them so at midnight we called it a day. My brother went to bed, and I was to giddy still so I gave the girl at the counter a quick tour of the car. We talked for a bit then I headed upstairs. I sheepishly returned a few minutes later when I found out someone stopped up the toilet and I had to borrow a plunger. I imagine I was slightly less cool after that.
We gassed up and headed north and I repeatedly tried to get Matt to try driving. After lunch on the PA turnpike I got in the passenger seat and let him go. He idled out into traffic at a grandmas pace, doing a steady 50. He finally gets on it, decided he didn't want to wreck my toy and pulled onto the shoulder.
I made the rest of the trip, hitting NYC at the evening rush. As we inched along the Belt Parkway in 95 degree heat it happily sat like any other car. No overheating, the AC was great, just a bit of heat off the tunnel because it's special. I dumped Matt at my mother's and then drove my nephew to lacrosse practice and niece to cheerleading. They bought a new black and red booster seat for the occasion. Both of them had giant grins when they were dropped off. From there I picked up Ollie, drove through White Castle to get him chicken rings, and went home.
Man's best friend in a vette eating a ???(who cares) is the pic o'the day!!! Wally, you so deserve this enjoy!!!
You are winning harder than Charlie Sheen right now. The one I rode in could only be described as brutal. Be safe, and remember if you get pulled over, just act dumb and be very polite.
All I can say is this thread makes me very happy - can't wait to hear about your adventures with this car!
Those first three pics in your last post. That's a smiling Wally, Wally. berkeley yeah!
I don't know about you, Wally, but when I drive mine I feel like I'm driving a supercar. They're just so fun
In reply to preach (fs) :
The first picture is my brother about to scare himself lol.
In reply to jfryjfry : It's as close to a supercar as I've ever gotten. I'm amazed at how good this car is and that there are ever better cars out there.
Brutal is a good word for it. Everything it does is as close to instant as I've ever played with.
The original plan was to hit a couple track nights, Thompson and Pocono to start, and there's a flying half mile in September on Long Island that I signed up for with my Buick though I think this will be significantly more fun. After that I'm taking a two week road trip down to the USGP. I'm still hoping the have the paperwork squared away by then.
I had an appointment with the DMV today to start jumping through hoops. They collected their pound of flesh then told me how to apply for a salvage inspection so I can register it. From the paperwork and previous experience I'm trying to remain optimistic but not having the original damage report or the receipts for the rebuild I'm being to think it will be a parts car by the time it gets through its cavity search. If nothing else my life is incredibly consistent.

Is the NC title a salvage title or is it a clean NC title. Maybe Im missing why NY is having a problem with it. If there's any way I can assist on the NC end please let me know.
Sounds a little complicated...
I have been thru this process, normally once repairs are done, you then get a enhanced inspection. After the inspection, you fill out paper work at a DMV or title office. They will want a list of repair parts, and if you did not pay PA sales tax, you will then have to pay PA sales tax as part of the process. After all the paper work is submitted, you then wait for the reconstruction title. I assume it is similar for your state.
Not sure how you were able to get tags and drive home a salvage title car.
Anyhow if you have a list of repair parts and cost of the parts, you should be able to complete the process. They want to ensure the parts were actually bought, and sales tax paid (sales tax for your state).
It can be tricky to find a place that does the enhanced inspection, some body shops do this.
After you get the reconstruction title, you then need to get a normal state inspection.
I am currently waiting on the DMV for one of these, taking longer than last time.....
North Carolina inspected the car and let it be registered after it was rebuilt. New York being special does not accept any other states inspection and requires their own. It has to go to a state facility at their leisure. I did not do the repairs, I bought a complete car that was tagged and being driven so I have none of the paperwork from it being rebuilt. I have a couple pics that give an idea of the damage but that's all.
I'm nicknaming it Swingline.
If you have a reconstruction title from another state, then not sure what your state really wants.
If they just want the enhanced inspection, that should be fairly easy, but typically they also want to collect state sales tax on the repair parts. But you will not have any repair parts.
Hopefully they will be ok with just the enhanced inspection and they will give you a new title for your state.

I'm not sure if this was a fluke, or if it would help, but when our daughter bought her car in IL it had a salvage title from a previous theft. When it got totaled in MS we noticed it no longer had a salvage title. Not sure what happened, or if it would happen again if someone registered a salvage-title car here, but...
