My '80 TR 7 has started smoking like crazy when I start it up.Investigation suggests either oil seals or water seals are bad, requiring a rebuild.
Since the engine is a '75 vintage it is unlikely that I will find a rebuilt one anywhere so,am open to suggestions to:
Rebuilt it myself- have never done this with a Rotary, but have rebuilt conventional piston engines
Find a rebuilder- any ideas (I live in Michigan)
Yank out the rotary and install a TR 7 engine - these are available, but would be a major job involving changing driveshaft, exhaust, motor mounts, subframe etc.
Drive the way it is and kill mosquitos
Rebuilding a rotary is probably more "different" than complicated. I'd start with something like this:

Of course you can also send the engine to one of the usual suspects when it comes to rotary rebuilds. Another option would be to trawl ebay for an engine, there are a fair number of FC 13Bs on there the last time I looked.
Where do you live in Michigan? I am a rebuilder and I live near Detroit. In-fact I'm finishing one this month then I will rebuild an 86-88 13b spec with a streetport once it is completed. message me for contact info, I'd love to hear/see about this project.

I have a 12A (1983?) under my work bench, in Michigan, looking for a home you could have for cheap, condition of the engine is unknown but supposed to be a runner. Will bolt right in and replace your 1975 wankel.
In reply to BoxheadTim: many thanks, I will check this out

Thanks for u r reply. I live near Big Rapids- about 1 hr. N. of Grand rapids.Haven't decided whether to rebuild, or not yet. Will return to Michigan w/the snow is gone and will decide then.Your price for a rebuild will help me decide.

Not sure how 12 A compares to a 13 B, but the phrases: "bolts right on" and "for cheap" are some of my favorites. Where can I get more info about a 12A?
In reply to bruceman: Thanks for u r reply.
I don't know anything about a 12A Wankle.Do u have any pics? Is the unit normally aspirated, CARBURETTED? How can I contact u?
Pics or it never happened...
12a is normally aspirated and carbureted. Smaller displacement and lower power than 13b.engine mounts are slightly different between the two.
BTW, it's Wankel, named after Felix Heinrich Wankel, the german engineer who developed it.
Just sayin, it's the man's name, he spent his life on it.

I went to school there, Big Rapids is an interesting place...

Big Rapids-Interesting? I haven't heard it called that. I worked at ferris in the early 90's. Where do u live/work and what do u charge for a 13-B rebuild?
