Any difference in pedal feel with the Wilwoods now that you've been driving on them for awhile?
In reply to Shavarsh :
The brakes are definitely better, but there is still a bit of a numb feel that I don't know what to do about. There is still no "Bite" to the brakes that gives that initial confidence when you put on the brakes, but it will lock up. Probably could have got the same result for a LOT less if i had just gone with a brake bracket and 11" disc.
I could have saved money and left the rear distribution gizmo out of the equation; I run it full open.
And as with all good soap operas, the world turns once again.
With Mrs NOHOME's friend having fun driving around in her Plymoth SCAMP, the request for an automatic shifter was put in the job basket.
I can not bring myself to ever deal with any gearbox that uses a TV cable, so C4 it will be. I will learn to live with the engine turning 3000 rpm while cruising at 60 mph
It is not without some trepidation that step two is complete:

Cars without overdrive are more closely related to Satan vs cars with TV cables.

Recall that this car tried to drive away in "Park" when I initially installed an AOD. I have been involved in 4 or 5 other AOD builds and none of them have ever worked right.
AODs I have learned, suck on many other levels; at least you can manually shift a C4.
Cant wait to see what surprises lurk inside this C4. I know it was driving and shifting when I bought it. And the fluid was clean and not burny. But that is it. Pulled the pan, no chunks or glitter, new filter cause I was there, but gonna send it.
The option is a L33 with a 4L60 cause those bits are sitting in the corner. But I don't think that the 4L60 is going to fit in the Miata tunnel unless I do a lot of cutting. I DO have a powerglide in the same corner, ( from the crashed Hot Rod) but that just brings us around to no OD and more work$.
I don't think I can get any intake to fit under the hood with the LS engine ( cause throttle body) and I wont do a hood scoop.
Tune in for the next episode!

Turns out that might come in handy...
The conversation in the shop todaywent something like this.....
Well....if you are going to give up a bunch of power to an automatic transmission, you might as well add a bunch of power. eh?
So rather than a C4 getting stuck on the ass-end of the 302 that was sitting bolted into the engine bay we now have this:
L33 with the powerglide from the Hot Rod.
A lot more work but maybe a better result? Still in the preliminary stages learning how this will fit and how much fabrication will be needed. Need to find a LS1 style intake manifold as I am pretty sure the truck intake wont fit under the hood.
I was asking myself the other night when reading the post about the c4 why you were going that way vs the ls swap.
Appears you asked yourself the same question!

Mostly because history has taught me that projects all have a debug period at the end that can try your patience. The 302 drive-train was pretty much two years past that point and the car could finally be treated like a car with no thought to the drive-train. The C4 swap met the customer requirements ( wife-unit wants an auto) and was going to take a few weeks and cost a few hundred $$$
The LS is both a new project ( I am drawn to that like a moth to a flame ) and it will face an unknown debug period at the end. I don't think I will mention the new drive-train details to the client; what she does not know will not hurt me!
On paper, there should not be much difference. The 302 should have been making close to 300 hp and torque. The L33 is 330hp if I believe the literature; it is going in totally rebuilt, but bone stock. I have a feeling that the difference is going to be dramatic for some reason; efi being one reason.
Exhaust and hood clearance are the two big technical risk.
The other reason why I might be crazy to start this swap is because another pile of British scrap metal is going to arrive in my shop this winter. Recall that Jag E-type rear end I have been assembling? It is pretty much done and needs to be added to the pile of scrap in order to become this:
So expect another NOHOME build-thread on the subject in the next month or so.
In reply to NOHOME :
I SO love lightweight Es.
Used to visit Miles Collier's cars monthly and his E (formerly Cunningham's) is a masterclass on how to build a racing car.
I'll be following that thread!
In reply to Slow_M :
I promise you no "masterclass" in anything I build. I more like jump out of the plane with a YouTube video on how to build a parachute.
So the mockup engine is in the hole with a shallow Camaro pan and a powerglide on the backside. As of yet the only intake I have is a truck intake, and as you can see it is not going to fit under the lid. There is a fix on the way thanks to an Angry car builder on this forum!
The project is at that stage where you don't dare anchor any point down until you have all the pieces of the puzzle in house. Then you start to negotiate needs, wants and easy/cheap vs hard/expensive path.
Manifolds arrived today. And it looks like they are going to fit. Its not what I call "Roomy"| but clearance is clearance Clarence and the exhaust flanges point to good empty space.
Next is the engine mounts and for that I want to try C5 Corvete style mounts and the ones I fleabayed wont be here till the end of the month.
I have an LS swapped IS300 with a low hoodline; it has an LS6 intake and a short mandrel bent tubing extension down and to the side for the throttle body. Works great. The non-truck intakes should clear fine, just adding this in case you have any issue with the stock throttle body location.
In reply to Kendall Frederick :
That is my hope. From what I can see and measure so far I should be good. But still at that point where everything is fluid and can be moved 1/4" one way or the other to make room. This whole game is like a jigsaw puzzle crossed with a Rubiks Cube!

Today was a most awesome day. Not only did I get to meet Patrick ( AKA AngryCorvair) but he came bearing parts for the LS swap in the form of an LS1 intake and accessories. We had a great time discussing the nature of how these projects evolve and how the skill levels develop on an as-needed basis. Amongst other car related stuff.
The bestest news is that the LS1 intake WILL fit well within the confines of the Volvo engine bay; kind of looks like it belongs there.
Bjornagain V2.0? Bjornagainagain? Bjornagain^2?
I'm here for this one. I always thought that an LS would complete the trifecta of perfection for this build IMHO (Miata, P1800, modern american muscle). while I'd love to see a T56 behind it, I totally and completely understand the uitility benefits of an auto.
Good luck!
It was Michael Yount ( you still out there) way back in 2014 who foresaw this day. So Michael, if you are out there you are entitled to one big "I TOLD you so..."

i really enjoyed the visit as well. i have followed this build thread from the beginning, and it really is better in person. i asked a couple times "so where's the seam between Volvo and Miata?" because the blending of the two is so clean.

You can't keep us waiting that long kind Sir.
rumour (canadian for rumor) has it that Limp Bizkit's "Nookie" was originally going to be called "Piguin".
i did it all for the Piguin, come on, the Piguin
An LS in the Molvo is a Big Win, come on, a Big Win
So give it all the gas, give it all the gas, give it all the gas
