Impressive both that you know this, and that VW actually made fancy hinges part of an option package!
I always liked the styling of all the VW/Audis of this era.

I read an article written by someone who used to own not one, but two Phaetons. At the same time.
The autocross pics were hilarious
Damn...
I had forgotten the Campagnolo hinges were a thing, this thread reminds me, I post a link, a day later I click the link and buy them.
That is some pretty sly enabling right there.
They will in no way work for my build. I kinda don't care.
I was a Volkswagen Tech when they came out and went to the training school for these. The teachers were trying to sell us on Volkswagens upmarket aspirations, they didn't like that most of the room thought it would be a giant mistake.
I have always liked these. HOWEVER, it seems that it is a smarter play to buy a an A8 or S class of similar vintage. That is painful to say out loud.
The actual smart play is a Lexus, of course.
Phaeton [PAYuhTON] german - verb - A device created to remove currency from all aspect of one's life. "I was going to pay for food and rent this week but phaeton"

But think of all the sales they might lure away from Audi!

That is the key, it IS an A8, wrought in steel.
They are all related, but the closest relative is the Bentley Continental to the point where people have attempted Bentley conversions.....
I have always like these cars, seemed like a really cool idea at the time. Not surprised that VW owners were not willing to do all the maintenance required on a high end vehicle and not surprised that so many of them are now $3,000 used problems. The W12 is so cool. I also wanted a W8 Passat back in the day, remember drooling over one in the showroom back in 2004. Glad I just kept my A4 Audi as that 1.8 turbo was a great engine!
