What's your preference? Wood? Leather Wrapped? Billet? 8 Ball?
I ask because my dad put a "T" handle shifter in my Corvair and I don't care for it too much. I was thinking about going back to a ball style shifter, the only thing is that for me, the factory style ball shifter knob is kind of small. I'm going to see what's out there.
My favorite shift knob was the one in my 1987 CRX Si. A soft rubber with a clear plastic overlay on top of the shift pattern. Great shape. I adapted it to the next three cars I drove, matter of fact.

I like balls. Wait... that didn't come out right.
If you google it, there are vendors who sell pool balls converted into shift knobs.
Used to put the Hurst "T" handle on everything... just because.
S197 has a Hurst shifter w/ classic ball style handle, works great, looks great... except w/ my tall berkeleying coffee mug (that goes everywhere w/ me) in the console so I'm intent on the Hurst pistol grip now which kinda defeats a short throw shifter but I gotta has my coffee.

I prefer smaller aluminum Japanese style ball knobs (good god THAT came out wrong).

I've got the classic appearing round Hurst knob in my Mustang. I really like the size and shape but it's started to crack. Close inspection when it was new would show small lines on the surface, and that's where it has cracked, so I think this was "cast-in" imperfections.
I'd like a replacement of a similar style but better made or of better materials.
Depends on the vehicle.
On an Auto-Xer or sports car, I like a nice 3/4 inch diameter knob that fits smartly in the palm. It just feels faster.
Old truck? Something classier and larger.
Dan
I like the old classic Hurst style knob as well. Not too big, not too small. However, you need to make sure whatever you get fits on the shift lever.

You gotta be real serious about your shift knob to buy something from them!

Those are really cool. Maybe I'm jaded from recently pricing out a new mtn bike for the 2014 racing season, but those prices seem quite reasonable.
On the money saving side, I recently discovered my 4 spd know from my ES M41 happens to fit my new T-9 shifter for the GT6. Score.

It's only peripherally related, but here's a picture of the gear selector I made for my '32 datsun replica
there are a few more in the build thread
8 Ball or diameter/density equivalent.
I'm thinkin' this for the S197...

These 355g Mitsubishi OEM knobs are pretty great, I know several people that swear by them (but apparently, the leather degrades over time)
Personally, I have been wanting this Nismo knob for a while now
Momo leather on most cars, although they don't use real leather anymore. Its especially good on my daily driver because it doesn't get as cold in the winter as others. I have a round white knob on the Hurst shifter in my Mustang because it suits it.
I've got a white Corvette shift ball in the Ranger. Plain. Simple. Cheap.

This.
I installed one on my last race car (1g eclipse) and it felt just right in all situations. Mind was degraded a little with wear but still felt ergonomically perfect.
I prefer a knob that I never have to think about; something that is easy to find and hold without really focusing on anything other than the next turn. That, of course, will vary from person to person but this one worked excellently for me.
Hrmm.... reading this thread makes me realize that i have a problem.
I like the factory shift knob in the MSM, but i think i've switched the knobs on everything else i've really ever owned.
MX6 was wearing a 93 Escort knob which was a big improvement, but is now wearing an NRG "bullet" knob since the short throw apparently was re-tapped.
Escort is wearing a Garage Star Nylon/Delrin round knob: http://garagestar.com/shop/shift_knob_nylon.html
And i probably have a box of 10 or so knobs waiting to be used in the future.

I had this little gem on my challenge e30 when I bought it...
I could sell it really cheap, but I cannot actually recommend it!
Thas it, I'm gonna join the shifter knob of the month club.

I have this in the ms3 right now. It's exceedingly funny as I've fooled mazda techs with it before- it's a 5 speed knob on a 6 speed car. I bought it because it was pink. It's light, but ok for DD work. The OEM mazdaspeed knob was REALLY nice too
