There's a cheap 2010 base Impreza for sale locally. Those still have a real auto not a CVT I believe. This would be a non performance DD for the youngest so sporting pretensions are zero consideration. Are they basically good vehicles. What's the word on head gaskets for that period of EJ20's?
I found your intended black car. From pics:
My guess, and only a guess, is the front clip has been replaced.

Price is good for the miles. Of course, I'd try to get it lower.
Subaru mpg kinda sucks for such a small car, but...awd. Rated at 20/22/26. That's the same mpg of a '10 Ford Escape but the Escape is much larger/useful

Cheers John. Good points, I can see them now, I was looking on my phone earlier when I posted. Nice detective work, no fly's on you!
YEs, mileage isn't great, but she'll have a 24 mile round trip to school and a 50 mile round trip to the stables on the weekend. Not massive.
I started looking at Escapes and they are still on the radar. I also looked at Honda Elements and CR-V's. The problem is CR-V's seem to be 5 years older and or 50k more miles than an equivalent price and condition Escape. Elements are even worse. I went to look at a CR-V on a dodgy by here pay here lot yesterday when I knew they were closed. Way to crusty underneath.
I found this by tying in 2010 or newer, automatic, under 100K miles, 4WD and under $4K in CL. It jumped out due to the mileage. I"ve got a note out to the owner, let's see what he/she says. Also, I've always liked Subarus on a personal level.

Unfortunately stick shift is a killer for her. Getting a car is a necessary evil and absolutely nothing she actually wants to do. Pity I didn't post this thread last week as my eldest daughter just bought a 13 Chevy Sonic precisely because it was a manual. Thanks anyway. Texas car would have been awesome.
It's right about at the point where it may need head gaskets, but fix them right and it won't be a problem again. Unlike the advice that's been put on here before, use the turbo MLS gaskets and new head bolts.
The 2.5L/auto combo is a dog and doesn't get very good mileage. The 5EAT or 4EAT transmissions are very reliable.
NOBODY make an AWD system as good as Subaru's. They just work.
My daily driver has been a 2009 base model Impreza like that for almost 10 years, so clearly I like the car.
The good:
* The most comfortable, composed ride of any car I've ever driven, including Oldsmobiles, Cadillacs, and Buicks.
* The AWD is beyond reproach. I've never even seen the traction control come on, even when I was the last car let through before the road closed. Very rarely I'll take a hard right turn onto wet pavement, feel the front wheels slip about a quarter turn, and then feel the rear wheels do the same. Very cool.
* Brutally simple. Still has the normal 4-speed auto. Not much gadgetry to break. Relatively big, low-stress N/A motor.
* Not just reliable, but durable. The interior has held up. Trim parts don't scuff or fall off.
* Seats, controls, etc. fit me well.
The bad:
* City mileage is just plain poor. I don't care about this myself.
* The base stereo is inadequate. The under-seat subwoofer makes it more than adequate.
* Not a fast car in most regimes. Good for a slap in the back when the light turns green, and a decent passer, but kind of slow otherwise.
* Pretty noisy by today's standards.
* Rolls a bit more than, say, an Altima.
* Pretty wimpy window motors? I guess I'm running out of things now.
