Andy, what I was suggesting was that you would make a "regular" pass to win the drags again, then you'd make your "over budget by $37" pass as an exhibition. Your overall results wouldn't be classified as exhibition, just that particular drag pass, which would not be used to compute your overall results.

Passed you 4 years ago. Just never did it. Earlier post refers to trying to stay inside the rules for any Challenge car regular class for anything we bring down. If we adjust the car for squeeze it will have a different gear ratio. Shift rpm and trap rpm are lower. Also, the preload is different.

thanx Mr Joshua I was just entertaining the thought of deisel power but then changed my mind as the setup i was thinking about would totally kill my budget cap...but it was a good exercize anyways...while I am here I am trying to come up with the most logical sollution to the challenge...where can I find the entries from the 2010 challenge,meaning what setups they were using and images ect...?
not that 2011 will be the same as 2010 but trying to talk prospective team members into this is like trying to tell some one about santa clause or rock and roll when they have never heard of such a thing...the biggest one was a 10 sec car built for the budget..."no way that is even possible" is the usual response,so any links to results and entries would be awesome so that I can pass it on...
also i read somewhere in a build thread for a grm challenge car that oem brakes and safety items do not count against your budget...Is that true,because the brake set up I am looking at cost's like $1500 on ebay and it is oem...oh and by the way I'm using Mercedes parts...
Also if I recoup more than $1005 can that money be used towards safety items no counting against my budget? just a few of the many random scenarios I have running about in this pea brain of mine...

OEM to the car you are building. If you recoup money you can use if for a tutu to dance on your hood to try to bribe the judges if you want. It's your money, use it as you please. You can only use up to the amount the part cost and up to half of the total contest budget towards you car on budgeted parts. You can spend as much as you want with whatever money you want on parts that don't count towards budget.

You may be reading too much into that. You are allowed to replace the OEM components with new OEM components on the brake system without a penalty, so new rotors with new stock rotors, new calipers with new stock calipers, of the same type that were on the vehicle, not some magic setup that was offered OEM on a higher performance version. The reason for the rule is to ensure brake parts are in good order and not overlooked creating a safety issue in the name of budget, it is not something to exploit for a performance gain.
There are some odd exceptions which we had to explore with our car since our entire suspension was from a different car so we used the OEM from the donor, not the original car but our car was a rather odd exception. Any grey area stuff should definitely be run past the staff before you commit budget.

The only dumb questions are those left unasked.
I think a c36 is a great idea and would love to see one at the challenge. This year's event had a couple $40k (originally) european luxury cars enter in the sub $1k class and they looked great and ran well. Good luck.

I don't think you are understanding.
I am assuming you are not starting with an actual C36, since only 200 of them were made, and you have asked about brake upgrades.
So, you are starting with a C class, and looking to fit the braking system from the SL600 onto it, just as the C36's did.
Great idea.
However, the car you are working with (the C class) did not come with those brakes. You will be upgrading by using brakes from a different car (the SL600).
You may do this, but it is not a budget freebie. You have to charge the upgrade against your budget.
If the C class has worn out brakes when you buy it, you may install new ones without charging your budget, but only identical ones to the ones that came on the original car. Not the ones from the SL600.
It was a factory sanctioned mod, but it was only delivered on 200 cars. It was not delivered on the C class cars.
If, however, you have landed a REAL C36 for less than $2011 with worn out brakes, you can use the brakes from the SL600 as a replacement without charging your budget. They are identical to what came on the car. I will, of course, have to kill you.
I love your idea of trying to replicate a classic factory hot rod, but you can't do it to a C class without charging the budget.
Anyone ever do the challenge with a vette? Last year was my first year there and we did a Rx7,while looking for another 1st gen for this year I stumbled up on a 84 vette with the Z51 susp.So its going to be my project for the Challenge this year.Never owned a vette any Ideas???? Thanks
