So... here is a good benchmark as to what it takes to go 200+ in that vintage of mustang
Twin Turbo 2012 Mustang at Texas Mile, 206 MPH
Unfortunately there arn't many details on this car. I guess this makes it possible, but not probable.

This is how the election became what it was. It seems a lot easier to assume sloppy reporting in this case.
The sloppy reporting also stated that he did 175mph, that can't be a typo.
I'm not buying 175mph, either. Canadian mounty intercept. Clearly a translation error. 208 km/hr ~ 129mph, which is a lot more rational number.
EDIT: It's a joke- obviously Oklahoma is a long way from Canada.

It's not "Canadian Mounty" though. It's "Canadian County" which is just west of OKC: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Canadian+County,+OK/@35.5246054,-98.2726097,10z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x87adfbfeb5ff3b19:0x8c1bd8b79a91367e!8m2!3d35.5593784!4d-98.0465185
It may be unlikely, but I think it's at least within the realm of possibility that the reporter has their facts straight. With enough boost, proper gearing, and a mile or so of empty, straight-ish road it's possible the kid broke 200 in his "heavily modified" Mustang. A twin turbo kit from Hellion can get you over 600whp for $8500, with 1200+ whp just a couple of fuel system upgrades and a different tune away. So for around 10k, any Joe can have a 200mph Mustang.
There was a case about 10 years ago where a guy was supposedly clocked doing over 200 on a bike as was set to go away for a long time and be paying for it for even longer. I seem to recall he was clocked from a Cessna so that probably was doing 120 at best. He proved the bike wasn't even capable of the speeds he was accused of. At that point once he'd proved it was impossible they couldn't pin anything on him as the speed reading was completely unreliable no matter what his real speed was. A decent lawyer will have this thrown out before coffee break.
I think it was on Jay Leno's garage they got a otherwise stock mustang with some power adders over the 200 mph mark.

I doubt it. Let's just assume he was going essentially foot to the floor. What would he have got? 4 or 5 mpg? A Mustang only has a 16 gal tank, so even if he'd just filled up he wouldn't have got much more than 80 miles max.
In reply to Tyler H:
I don't think it's that implausible really. The hardware on the car in NordicSaab's video above can be duplicated for around 10k. Seems fairly plausible to me that somebody would spend that much on a Mustang.
It also seems plausible to me that a 19 year old guy would be tempted to test the limits of his high hp Pony car if given the chance.
200mph isn't the same 'halo car' territory that it was 20 years ago. It's relatively attainable for anybody with a bit of disposable income. Between all of the drag cars, and boosted Lambos, R8s, Vipers, Corvettes, Pony cars, Hellcats etc I'd be really curious to know how many 200mph capable vehicles are on US roads. I'd wager that the number might be surprisingly high. If there are 5000 of them in the entire US, is it that crazy to think that a young idiot overdid it on the street?
The reporter likely just passed on the info given to him/her. Any decent reporter would not just make up information/facts.

Well speaking of douche nozzle parents spending way too much on kids cars, I live in West Lafayette, IN home to Purdue. Around town here there's a 458, an MP4-12c, several 911 Turbos, something like 6 GT-Rs, 5 Maseratis, an Exige, an Elise, and a butt load of modified STis. Admittedly one of the Maserati has a faculty parking pass, and the Exige I don't think is a student's either. But still.
For those trying to pinpoint the crime scene: The location according to a story I read is "Kilpatrick Turnpike in Oklahoma City." The article also stated, "Troopers said the driver, later identified as 19-year-old (name redacted by me), accelerated and clocked the speed at 176 mph. At one point, he was driving at 208 mph."
The 208 won't stand up. They'll get him for 176 and throw the book at him.

Are you saying high schoolers or college kids are driving McLarens and Ferraris? Wow, I thought it was bad enough that this morning dropping my daughter off I had to wait while one girl backed in her new Lincoln after waiting for a boy in his new F150 Lariat to park then had to wait again for a new S550 GT Mustang, but E36 M3, that's nothing on Ferraris and McLarens
Yes, there are college students in town here driving vehicles costing multiples of what I make in a year. To be fair the kid in the Ferrari keeps it tame on the streets. Okay, the large volume of modified Subarus aren't all that expensive compared to the rest, but still more than I'd want to send a kid off to school in.
I went to college from '88-'92. There was a kid in my class that not only had a cherry '65 GTO convertible 4 speed, but also had a Greenway corvette. His dad had a testarossa.
In high school many of my classmates would get brand new cars when they turned 16. Brand new BMW 325is, Porsche 944, Alfa Romeo GTV6, etc, etc. If you got a Civic or a Rabbit that was slumming it.
I got my grandma's old Mercury Monarch.
In reply to griffin729: According to my observations during my brief time in West Lafayette, the vast majority of kids driving expensive cars were foreign. I lived with one. They're used to spending XXXX on cars where they're from, and in most cases cars here cost less than that. So, when the kid tells the parents they need money for a car, they get a wire transfer for way more than they actually need, so they splurge.
BAck in 1984 my wife got a brand new Fiero and her boyfriend had a Corvette. Neither of them were affluenza douche nozzles and neither wrecked their paid for by the parents cars. I on the other hand had a used Hillman Imp from the junk yard that cost 60 Britsh pounds (about $90-100 USD at the time) I was a douche nozzle and crashed it into a lamp post while on two wheels, in fact the lamp post was all that stopped me going over. Money does not make or brake douche nozzle Tendancys. I suppose some people here will condem me as I'm considering passing my Boxster down to my youngest kid in a couple of years.

Go to Vancouver (aka Wangcouver). There are Asian students there with monthly allowances that exceed an engineer's annual salary.
Yes, most of the cars I spoke of are driven by asian kids. Also the worst drivers around here tend to be locals.

No effing way he had room on the Kilpatrick to hit 208. Too many curves, too many hills. 176 even. I ain't skeered of high speed driving, but I sure as hell wouldn't be pushing those kinds of speeds on the Kilpatrick, even if it was legal event. Something still smells off about those numbers...

the problem with that angle is that the car you show can do 200+ in a single mile from a dead stop. Given a longer stretch it wont take as much power. in my dumber years a buddy and I did 160+ mph (had to calculate from engine rpm, final drive ratio, and tire size as the speedo only went to 120-ish) in a early 2000's Mitsubishi Galant that had a little work done and maybe made +250 to the wheels, it took quite a while to get to that speed, like 3 miles of WOT.
Also i would argue the accuracy of the calibration of whatever they were using to determine his speed. i imagine that, like most measurement devices, it has a calibrated range. Even speedometers in most cars arent super accurate north of 100 mph because 99% of the time they dont need to be. Not to say he wasn't hauling ass but the numbers may be skewed.
