Specials class. Run any tires you want, no requirement for headlights, wipers or brake lights. The catch is that you're only eligible for the "fastest specials" or "most spectacular failure" trophy. Even if you handed everybody their butts at the autocross, you are not eligible for fastest autocross (...or fastest drag, or contours...)
Rule 4 says
Only production-based passenger cars are allowed in the regular competition. All locosts, race cars, kit cars, Zambonis and the like are allowed only in the Special class (See Rule No. 28).
Rule 7 says
All major body panels used as a foundation for the Challenge car must be present on the car at all times. This includes the floor pan, inner fender panels, hoods, fenders, roof, sills, etc. Bumpers may be removed or replaced. Full-frame cars must retain their full frame, while unibody or subframe cars must retain their full floor pans, subframes and the like. Exceptions to this rule are listed in Rule No. 9.
Rule 28 says
The GRM powers that be said: A Special class for locosts/race cars/kit cars/etc. will be run for exhibition only. It will be scored independently from the rest of the competitors. The Special-class competitors will only be eligible for the Special-class trophies, unless one of them explodes spectacularly. Then we may reconsider. Special-class cars must also meet the classification requirements for a recognized autocross class (for example: SCCA’s A Modified). These cars must meet all Challenge budget rules and safety regulations with the following exceptions: a) The cars do not have to be roadworthy. Headlights, windshields and horns are not required. b) Non-DOT approved racing slicks are allowed.
Note: That is MY interpretation of the rules. Before buying something, you should call GRM HQ and get somebody on the phone who can give a definitive answer
We're offering a nice GRM goodie bag if you enter by October 15:
http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/have-you-entered-the-2013-challenge/71676/page1/#post1322340
Also, official entry deadline is November 1. I'm sure it sounds like i'm beating a dead horse here, but we need a solid headcount by then for the banquet and event staffing. Thanks guys.
Just an FYI: Best Western Gateway Grand is not honoring the $89 rate. They said that what is listed is last year's rate and this year is $92. Not a big deal.
If I'm going to drive for one or more teams, how do I need to fill out the entry form? Multiple forms for multiple teams? Or one form listing all teams? Same question for the entry fees.
I would like a clarification from the budget experts since I have not been involved in a challenge event for a few years now.
I think that I read something like this example:
I am driving down the road in my daily driver / challenge car and the timing belt snaps and general chaos ensues inside the engine. Can I then replace all needed parts with like stock items without incurring a budgetary hit?
BUT, if "while I am in there" I install a performance part like a better camshaft I need to budget only the cost of the performance parts in my build.
Correct? Close? Right out? Thanks!
One more Q?
If I plan on attempting to (poorly) bribe the judges, how many of them should I account for?
Thanks!

Correct. Timing belt wasn't snapped and you had a non-broken engine when you bought it. Replacing timing belt is "restoring back to as-purchased-for-$xxx-condition."
Cam hits budget.

If it'll be really awkward and weird to share, only account for one. Because then it'll be really awkward, weird, and hilarious.

Many thanks! I just wanted to make sure... I am extremely close with my budget but am trying everything possible to make it.

I was thinking of something small and simple that I could hand out to all of those involved in running the show... but am not sure that it is even feasible at this point.
I still have enough to do without getting serious with extra stuff yet.
Perhaps I could just get Tom to give me points for changing my avatar? It is a crappy cell phone pic of him getting tossed into the pool by a certain clown...
GAH! SF1, Spool, and possibly Argo already know this, but I got a good news bad news sammich this morning.
Good news, Wife caught a fat promotion at. Money good, free benefits, the whole bit.
The bad news- this promotion royally berkeleyS any REAL shot I had at getting to FL. Before her schedule was massively flexible and gave her an easy in out so she could work around me being gone, childcare, and the like. Being that I'd be gone for a week- it is not looking fortunate for us- as evening childcare is prohibitively expensive, and I've got barely enough cash in the hopper to cover the expensive of the trip in and of itself. I'm really happy she got the promotion, but this is the second year in a row I've been screwed by outside factors. I'm beginning to think this is never going to happen.
TELL ME ABOUT IT. Car is paid for, Ben's almost done with it- I've done what I can to pull this off, and now....BLARGH.
In reply to mndsm:
Hopefully we can find someone to at least bring the car down so all that work wasn't a waste. Ill do it if we don't get something worked out with Argo.
You'll need to log in to post.
