This may have been covered a while back in the discussion for the new rule-set, but my attempts at searching for that thread have been vaguely unsuccessful.

In the "Safety" portion of the new rules, it says that any "open" car running non-DOT slicks must have approved rollover protection. Fair enough.

If I run a targa-top car, with the factory roof-panel in place, would this be considered an "open" car, or not?

Non DOT slicks are different from r-compound tires like r6's and v700. You can run the common autocross tires or drag radial with out. A roll bar.

Rather than start a new thread, figured I'd zombie this one. I had a question about the parts recoup section. So say I have car I bought for $1000, would I be able to recover the full $1007 that's allowed this year, or would I only be able to recoup half of the money of the purchase price, in this case $500.

Neither.

You can recoup up to the purchase price of the car or parts deal, in this case $1000.

You may not exceed $1007 worth of recoup from everything on the finished Challenge car.

So, if you buy the car for $1000 and motor/ trans combo for $500 and sell the trans for $300, you may claim $1000 from parts sold off the car purchased, and $7 from the sale of the trans.

BUT, you don't want to do it. Trading is unlimited until the recoup limit is reached.

So, recoup the $1000, don't bother recouping the $7, and trade the trans for a turbo setup.

Cool. That makes it a little more clear for me. Trading huh? I never thought of that, I guess I don't knwo too many people have turbo setups waiting around to be traded for transmissions.

You have to be able to find open minded people that want what you have.

I must have encountered quite a few of guys like you a few years ago; That's why I couldn't trade my Crown Vic.

In reply to t25torx:

Honestly, I've never done too well with the whole trading thing. I live in the deep South, and like quirky cars. No one near me wants what I have.

But, I was helping you interpret a rule, not sharing a personal experience.

What about dumpster finds?

Dumpster finds are free IF it is a publically available dumpster.

If the dumpster is behind a locked gate you get to pick through it because your buddy unlocks the gate, no. FMV.

Basically, if the "find" is something anyone else could have found, it's free.

This is correct. But please note that if you buy the car for $1,000, then sell the parts for $20, you can only claim $20 of recoup value.

This is also true. But usually taking things out of dumpsters is stealing, which is illegal and not allowed at the event. Check your local laws.
