Digging the insty photos/videos. So cool to see GRM'ers out there! Break a leg...err....half-shaft!

I definitely feel bad for you not getting any good runs in, but a.) that's an epically awesome failure, and b.) I'm glad it happened close to home & not in Gainesville!
Just saw john welsh and Andrew Nelson go through the judging wit their GRM stickers. Andrew even pulled out his challenge budget spread sheet to show his 1900$ budget for 2015 challenge
I'm thinking same. I could probably honestly get 7k+ for my car(when not broken) to the right person. If they turned away the bug I'm guessing if I dropped a high 10/low 11 I would have been turned away too.
I'm working on last bits of the ~400hp ls1 impala so i can play while I figure out how to fix the Datsun

I think he has a R180 but even that rear is more than strong enough for his power. Those half shafts not so much. Not sure if piecing together half shafts from a newer model will help. I'd be interested in what part of the half shaft failed.
It was a universal joint failure on both. Inner left outer right. They are definitely the weak link. Looks like the ticket is 300zx tt shafts with a shorter shaft between the cv's and an adapter for the diff. I'm not sure of the cost involved in it. I have a $35 9" ford with discs. The easy button, provided i can find parts, is stronger later model cv shafts. I found a kit for only $3400 that uses porsche 930 joints and lots of billet parts good to 800hp.
Derp. left a message with the driveline shop i use to see what he thinks.
Stampie i'll send you the pics can you host them for me since photobutthole is holding my account hostage?

That's sad for $3k. I didn't watch but the crowd judging sounds like bullE36 M3.
In reply to Patrick:
I think there are some beefier half shafts out of 4wd front nissan truck but I'm not positive. I know they run r 180 diffs in front...maybe even r200 IIRC from my z car road racing days. And they were a 4:10 gear ratio iirc

when Nelson came to crowd judging he had his GRM Challenge budget sheet and ff said we believe You but we'll only let you run if you sell us car for $3000 after race. Andrew declined because he said he was two sentimentally attached to the car

On GRM related news...John welsh made it through 3 rounds in his infinity challenge carcomplete with challenge number panels....good job john!

Andrew if you read this I'll offer you $3k with the provision that you can hold onto it as long as you want.
In reply to Stampie:
You can see his interview on roadkill facebook page....they put up the video. It's about 50 minutes long but you can fast forward to end. Andrew is about 5th car from end. John welsh was about 3 cars before andrew.

Congrats John. Kinda makes me want to plan my summer vacation around it next year. Think they'll accept my $50 Q45?
Also makes me wonder how many people have learned about the Challenge from seeing the cars representing there.
What a fun day. The Q45 continues to be more fun for me than I feel it deserves to be!
For the hooptie races they did random pairing. Winner of that pairing continues on. I won two pairings and got knocked out of my third pairing. It only went down to five pairings so I went about halfway through. Great fun.
As I approached judging Frieburger called it an Acura. In drag passes he referred to it as "the non-discript Japanese luxury car" which I take as high praise.
Stampie: Sure, your black bomber Q45 would be easier to get in than my generally mint interiored version.
As for learning about The Challenge. I find it very disappointing how few people at this event know about The Challenge. Of course, I/we were more than happy and eager to explain it to them.
I was approached by one and only one individual who came to look at the Q because he knew exactly what it was and had a sense of what they could do. Just one. But, I talked to many others who came over to see what it was. It's still humorous to me to see "car guys" make a sly pass to the trunk to see the badging. All the while these guys will never ask what it is because as car guys they probably know "they should know".
Rain delayed morning but once it cleared the first pairing of the day (and first cars down the track for the entire event) was Pat's Datsun vs Andrew's Bugzilla.
Pat experiences his ujoint/shaft damage on this very first run. It was the first time he had launched the car on this new torque converter. Needless to say, it converts torque very well. Maybe too well.
Andrew and i were talking. He said F&F were extremely respectful and he was not expecting either of us to be able to run the hooptie challenge. They kept saying $3000 cars in all the print. The answer email i got was unclear beyond F&F have final say. This morning over the PA they said it has nothing to do with total spent, it was about if your car looks like it's worth $3000. They specifically said if you spent 10 grand on a turd and it would only sell for 3 grand you're fine, but if you spent less and they deemed your car worth more that you're not in. The website was misleading in that regard. I could have pulled the ls driveline from the datsun, put it in the ratty s10 with a turbo, spent $ on everything, and been golden because the truck looks like ass.
It was a neat event. Now that I did it, it's off the list of things to do and we can concentrate on the challenge and general shenanigans and hooniganism. Andrew put it best, it was neat to do once but the challenge is us.
I'm going to let him brag about what he did and not steal his thunder.
So since the datsunsan asplode, i left the track early and made dinner for my kids. Then i got my coolant fitting drilled/tapped for the impala, finished my radiator plumbing, air intake, and got that big thing fired up. It sounds gooooooood .
I stand behind what I wrote in this thread back in May...
John Welsh wrote: From the very core the main difference is that The GRM Challenge is a competition and RK Zip Tie is an exhibition.
Andrew was drawn by random as one of the attendees/racers to compete against F&F.
He drew Finagan.
Finnigan knew he had to throw everything they had against Andrew so Finnigan chose to drive The General Mayhem.
It still wasn't enough as Andrew won that pairing.
