So my takeaway from what you all are saying is that they are putting value to labor. If you take the time to polish a turd you don't race. If you put little effort in to a ringer that looks like a pos you are ok.
Nope not my kind of fun.

I would have said sure if you sell me General Mayhem for 3k.
Oh and although the Challenge is a competition I have read (I think in the rules) that it is first and foremost an editorial based event. And that makes sense since it is in the end something to put content in the magazine that advertisers will support.
The challenge issue is always the issue I look forward to. I have never made it to one so the next best thing is to read all about it in the magazine.
dunno but there were 2. one was decent light blue, other was crusty light blue with a darker blue/woodgrain tailgate. both were quick.

Stampie, thanks for the offer, but I really do have an attachment to this one. It was built after a very challenging time in our families history. When Cameron was able to do something, he asked if we could build a car...he wanted to do a Volksrod. We were in the process of building our first Drag Week car. The day after he mentioned the build, the Henry J came out of the barn and the Bug went in. We built the car in 77 days. We loaded it into the trailer with wet paint, and headed south. It took the ET record by .001 (10.572 set in '06 by the red Datsun, 10.571 by Bugzilla in '08). Bugzilla placed 3rd in '08. We ran it again in '11 and placed 2nd in the A-x and 2nd overall. Returned again in '15, broke it, fixed it and set the ET record at 10.396 with hot welds in the car and finished 1st overall. Its a crowd favorite everywhere it goes.
We have sold 4 challenge cars and one got junked. I knew if I was asked to sell the car at $3000, I would say "No". I was very appreciative to how they handled the judging and acknowledged the Challenge. I would bet more than 200 people heard about the Challenge for the first time when they visited the pits. John and Pat also shared details about the Challenge. We had the advertisement that was displays at Carlisle with us and talked about the Challenge with everyone who asked for details about the Bug. And there were many who heard the interview who may have never heard of the Challenge.
Racing General Mayhem was a thrill! That was the whole reason I wanted to go to the Zip Tie. I hope that does not sound as selfish as it sounds in my head. But I really wanted to show what we could do with our (my) favorite car. Hearing the Hemi roar next to the Beetle Buzz was a blast!!! Bugzilla ran 10.385 at 127.04 to the General Mayhem's 10.978 at 124.22. Mike signed the time slip. It will be a keep sake.
Funny detail...the 10.46 next to Pat was an ugly run. It laid over in second gear. I saw the fuel pressure was too high and climbing. So I was toggling the fuel pump to keep it running. We had to adjust the fuel pressure, throw plugs in it, John got the humidity readings, made a timing change to match the condition, adjusted the tire pressure to match the bite and it went 10.385 in 86% air density which was dead on to what we figured it would go with the adjustments. Thanks to Pat, John, Calvin and Paula for the help.

I made my offer in jest. Never expected you to sell it. Funny the impression it's made. One of my friends was at the 2016 Challenge for just an hour or so but he brought up your Bug at dinner tonight.

I know. Just wasn't going to let your post pass without comment. And wanted to share some details. So, I used it for a lead in.
If anyone at summit Motorsports park finds chunks of my halfshafts please return them as they may need to be scrapped for challenge budget recoup

I had no idea of the history of your car. I completely get it!!! That is really cool.
Watching dad take down a car that many hold in high regard is an experience I will never forget. This weekend was awesome!
Here is my viewpoint as the race played out. Thanks for the support everyone!
I wanted to stay and watch because i knew they would pull general mayhem to try and beat him. Once the car blew and the bug was ready to run though i went from track mode to dad mode and played with the kids before i made the impala live.

Yeah, it was pretty cool of Mike to do that for us. We're planning to frame it.
There is another youtube video shot at the end of of the track Tha shows Andrew pulling Finnegan by 6+ car lengths in the traps.
L don't know how to post it....sorry
Andrew, Calvin, and family: You guys rule, as always. Nice job beating the General! He got the jump on you too!
Pat: Sorry to hear about your halfshaft mishap.
John: I love that Q45. Nice work!

"Hey look you can make a car so powerful it explodes rear axle parts for only $2000!"
I fully expect the picture of our cars 1&2 in staging lanes to be in the magazine. I hereby grant permission to use it
I know I'm pretty well useless, but it makes me smile knowing you guys were out there representing us.
Was asked these questions by a few GRMers and most are repeated. Yes, we tested in April, May and June to prepare. Proved out a launch rpm issue/threshold/response. Picked up .003-.004 in 60' and 1.1-1.2 tenths total. Timing tests were done a few years ago. Tire pressure adjustment at Norwalk was to drop .75 psi for track temp and tire response. The timing change was an increase of 2 degrees due to humidity. Normally we just set conservative tune and run what it runs. We got the call to run the F&F vs the fans and added the timing to get some more power into it. The fuel pressure change was made because the regulator had a little fit on the first pass. Based on weight and mph, 370-375 HP. Pump gas with a little of the special recipe...okay, okay...Torco 8 oz in 5 gallons...just a little insurance. It's a flat top piston.
And in typical me fashion, i went in blind and untested on a new setup. Actually this was my "break in ohio not Florida" test. I passed. Or failed. Whichever way you look at it. Better to trail 40 minutes and break than 14 hours.
