2004 Hyundai Accent, 105K miles, drives perfectly, but makes a loud, speed dependent buzzing noise in Drive/Coast. Otherwise a good running clean car.
Dealership says "needs a new one, $2500".
Kelly BB says $1900 tradein, $3600 private.

Needs a new one of what? Tranmission?
Do you still like it, would you drive it for another 100k, and would you be able to spend $2500 to get another car to last that long?
Likely the dif pic coming out. Not uncommon. Used trannies are a dime a dozen. The car will last another 100k (if you've taken care of it, t-belts, fluids).
If it helps, my wife's 2000 accent threw the diff pin at 120k. Swapped in a used engine/trans and the car is over 170k now. We're planning on it lasting us until somewhere in the neighborhood of 225-250k.
^ Why would you step DOWN in car?
Thanks for the perspective.
I authorized the repair, let's see what I wind up with.

they are not bad cars at all. better than you might expect
So you're paying the dealer 2500 to fix the tranny? Ouch!
I was under the impression the car was for sale for $2500, and you were going to swap in a used one for uber cheap. That would have been a decent deal.
oops.. read that wrong.
I do not see why it would cost $2500 to replace the trans. Have you priced any independant shops in the area if you could not do the work yourself?
I know with my saab, I got a quote to replace the transmission for $1600 from an independant shop. Surely they could do an accent for cheaper
