My S10 has a 8.8, LSD, disc brakes, coil overs and 4 link with panhard, nothing in the rear end came with the truck.
I will not get wheel hop.

I think that is the answer. Depending on cam/intake setup you may even be able to run a decent rear gear and not kill it on the top end.
Updating this aluminum cased, close ratio, Super T10 located and aquired.
Thanks Jeff for the assist
Great find! What was your source? I'm seeing wrecked GM pickups and SUV's selling cheap on CL at times.
I found a guy in S Michigan who strips wrecked trucks out, he goes through them quickly so you have to move when he has one. He is about 100 miles from me.
I didn't even ask about the trans, but engine, harness and computer was $450, he had a 6.0 I missed with everything above, it was $600
Not bad. I bet the lowly 4.8 that no one wants would be even cheaper.
thinking really really evil thoughts.
I searched around until I could find the whole package at a good price, I don't think the transmission would be a huge additional hit, but if you want a manual that may be a rarity issue.

No hurry, just trying to decide to do a turbo or LSx for the Volvo.

Turbo LSx

My God... it was so painfully obvious. How did I not see it?
Noob LSx question here, do the stock computers get sent out to be reflashed? Is there any sort of security system that needs a workaround in the truck motors?
Sent out? BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Wait, you might be serious. Sorry. GM ECu's are the easiest thing in the world to tune. With your own laptop. Yes, you can pay for a canned tune, but with HPTuners et al it's easy peasy.
I would say a caveman can do it, but he probably doesn't know what a computer is, so I won't say he can.
You need the flywheel for a early 6.0 liter 3/4 ton truck IIRC, that's the magic one with the LS flywheel pattern and gen 1 (truck? maybe thats the problem?) clutch pressure plate pattern.
^This.
Depending on your ST10 spline count, you can use a big block clutch kit for 10 spline kit (O‘Reilly - K5552-03) and (I "think") LS style kit for 26 spline.
If you have to use big block style, you'll have to get the dowels removed from the flywheel and open up the holes on the pressure plate for the metric bolts.
In reply to Strike_Zero:
I thought the special flywheel was identical to the old pattern right down to the SAE hardware?
I'm pretty sure the pattern is the same, but the bolts are metric. I'll have to check mine tomorrow.
I used this video as a guide.
