Whatever I get, it should be pretty turn-key at this point. If I find one that needs brakes and tires, or a bumper, or something minor, I'd buy it, but I don't have the bandwidth right now for another project.

How about a Honda Fit? I bought a 2011 for my daughter this summer for about $5k and it's a great little car.
Handling is sharp. You can get it with a manual, though the auto isn't bad. Holds a ton of stuff - it's got some Tardis thing going on. It's not exactly fast but it'll get out of it's own way, and keep with 85 mph highway traffic. Drive it 320 miles and put 8 more gallons of gas in it!
