IIRC stock engine handles boost well so should hold naaaws well.

This seems like an uber-cool idea to me. I know the LS swap is cheaper, faster, able to jump the snake river canyon, etc. but I really like the idea of using the Cayenne lump for something other than hauling around 5000lbs. of pompous.
Just to be different, how about a Nissan VQ35? Similar/more power than the car originally had, pretty easy to find in junkyards these days (at least the transverse versions), and reliable/cheap.
Corvette drivetrain must be cheap since nobody use them. Lq turbo on it. Or 1uz turbo on 928 drivetrain.. Or.. What about a cummins ? :D
That $200 engine seems like the easiest route to an actually running car. That's the only way I'd consider this project (who am I kidding I wouldn't touch a 928).
In reply to pres589:
I'm leaning towards that path too. I may very politely decline the free shell of a car.
I'd buy the 8v 928 engine from Craigslist and make it into a coffee table. That will be a much more enjoyable ownership experience than having it installed into an actual 928.

I have a 1999 Suburban, tell me more about the 8.1 of yours.....
I've got a really wacky idea:
944 turbo engine(!) 3.0L S2 lower end, 2.7L 8V head, K27 turbo, ~350hp and I could put "924" badges on it!
With the torque tube needing to be modified anyway to swap, this might be the best possible place to swap in the FWD LS4 and convert it to rwd.
I have a 928 and I can confirm the motors are a pita to work on and get parts.
Cayenne motor has been mentioned, but I have seen threads on rennlist where it was determined these engines will not fit.
My vote would be a domestic v8 of your flavor of choice. The 928 motor is very wide and provides plenty of space for other options.
Given the amount of space there is, if cost were no object, I'd put a Supercharged DOHC 4.6 Ford "terminator" Cobra engine in there. But cost is a very big object here, so...
Hey Lux, that's a cool idea! With that 3800 accept a supercharger from one of the transverse FWD 3800s?
That car came with close to 300hp stock and by today's (and challenge) standards they were not that fast. Anything less is going to make it worse.
