Before I go try to "steal" this car from what I believe to be an ill-informed or gullible seller, I want to confirm I'm not the stupid one here. CL ad says his 944 "needs a clutch because can't be put into gear when running" I think that the clutch is fine and the clutch slave is bad, which is a cheap and easy job vs. a clutch job. Am I missing something?

See if the pedal simply flops to the floor, or is in fact stuck on the floor. If either of these are the case, then there is a good chance it is just the clutch slave.
I've had luck with 944s with bad clutch slaves, but replacing them is not cheap and easy. For some reason, bleeding the hydraulic clutch is a bitch in these cars..for me anyway.

Thanks. If the pedal appears to function correctly but doesn't actually disengage the clutch, what else am I looking for? "Cheap and easy" is in relation to a full blown clutch job anyway. The article on Pelican makes it seem not too bad to bleed the clutch, so long as you get the tail end of the car waaaay up in the air - is that not the case?

It is the case, it's just a PITA to get all the air out.

Broken pressure plate or some other issue which will require a clutch teardown.
Actually look at the slave cyl when someone pushes the clutch pedal. If it doesn't move (or doesn't move enough) then it's either the slave or the clutch master cyl. If it moves quite a bit, then it's time to tear it down. The only time I've had trouble bleeding the system was one time I changed a slave cyl because it was dripping, and after hours of trying to bleed it, realized the clutch master cyl was also bad.
what He said ^ ... i use a mighty vac to bleed them, never an issue, though now that ive stated it, the next one will be, im sure...
If the clutch pedal has pressure then the clutch needs replaced.
Sounds just like a later VW. I cant count how many times I have been told by owners that its just the slave and not a clutch. Its almost always the clutch and the owners seem to like the taste of crow.
could be pilot bearing siezed to input shaft....
