Trying to help the son of a friend of ours, have not seen the car, just description from the dad. If driven short distances it overheats enough to send coolant to the overflow. If driven longer distances it is ok. Neither person is terribly mechanical. They do not smell coolant from the exhaust. It does not leave puddles other than when overflow pukes. Maybe a sluggish Tstat? Some weird Ford thing? Need more info?

What motor?  Intake manafild gaskets were an issue in the 3.8. Also chk cooling fan operation.

By "short distance" and "long distance", do they mean "in town" and "on highway"?  If so, definitely check cooling fan operation.
