Going too look at an 89 b2200 tonight. Has some rust but the price reflects that. Are there any large issues with the 2.2 mazda engine?

Rust will be your biggest issue.
The f2 motor in them will run forever if you don't cook it or run it out of oil. Gearbox and diff are not the strongest if you go upping the power in them. But in stock form they hold up well (my b2000, same basic drivetrain, has over 400000km on it and still going)
The motor is non interference, so even a broken timing belt tends not to kill them.
It's the same basic motor as the MX6. So that should give you a bit of an idea of what they'll take. Pretty sure swank can attest to just how much punishment an f2 will take and keep on chugging.
A few other quick bits. They can often be a bit smokey. The rings seem to get sticky and they burn a bit of oil. They'll run like that no dramas, but can usually be reringed pretty easy. Quite a few guys don't even pull the engine to do it. The bores even at high miles are often in good shape.
The heater can be a bit hit and miss, a lot if times its due to improper bleeding of the cooling system. You really need to elevate the front end to bleed it properly due to how high up the firewall the heater hoses are.
The gearbox is essentially the same as the miata and early rx7's. It makes box replacement pretty easy and gives you more gear ratio optins. 5th gear swaps are pretty well documented and will give you a better highway cruise rpm
The guy ended up canceling until tomorrow on me so i now have some time to look around a bit more for info. looking to trade him the 81 chevy i just aquired for it so i can own one decently fuel effecient vehicle!
Stock carbies can give you a few headaches, a lot of guys go for the 32/36 Webber. With the right jetting it'll give very reasonable fuel economy.
Got rid of our due to carb issues... Headaches is a mild description of the PITA they can be. Still wish I would have held on to it. Pulled the seat brackets from an extended cab with buckets. Using them with a pair of 80's 300z seats was a drop in affair, and gave a shocking increase in leg room and comfort for someone who is 5'11".
I know that engine well. A variant of that engine is used in forklifts, its a good, but not bullet proof, engine. Running with low or old oil can lead to cam seizure. Overheating can warp the head or crack it. Spark plugs like to seize in the heads, helicoils can be installed without pulling the head. I prefer to prevent that problem by always using quality plugs with antiseize.
