Rivian just unveiled their R2, which I believe is a Model Y competitor.

But they also - surprise even to my friends that work at Rivian - rolled out the R3 and R3X. It's a shorter version of the R2 platform with a five door hatch body on top, and they have a hot three-motor version with flares and fat wheels called the R3X. It's pushing my buttons. It's a crossover, but imagine this a little lower...

Details are thin on the ground, but the bigger R2 is a 300 mile car with a sub-3 second 0-60 that uses the same platform. This thing will scoot.

If I heard right during the reveal, this is what will be built at SVreX's little plant in Georgia.

It’s like an Integrale. :)

That's the Ionic 5 :)

That side shot looks like a Golf Country, and somehow it kinda looks like a big N600 - especially the non-X.

They haven't revealed dimensions yet, other than a 2800mm (110.2") wheelbase. That's about 4" longer than a CX-5 but since this has no overhangs to speak of I suspect it's in that overall size range.

It's like a Golf Country and a Lada Niva had an electric baby!

I want to build a pavement version. This thing, nearly 40 years (!) later.

I hate absolutely none of this 80s retro futuristic stuff we're all doing right now. Color me curious.

Wow, that looks pretty damn cool! Although I'm hoping for more EV cars than crossovers/trucks.

I'd rock it... if it had 2" less wheel and 3" less ride height.

This quote is a bit concerning regarding the GA plant:

Shifting production of the R2 from the in-development plant in Georgia to the company’s plant in Normal, Illinois, will save $2.25 billion, Rivian said in a press release. It will also allow the vehicle to begin production earlier, it said.

The company said it will pause construction on the Georgia plant, to be resumed “later.”

I'll take two (even if I can't afford a single unmodified one).

I'd like to point out that having Photoshop on my work computer is not good for productivity.

Most electrics do nothing for me. And after hunting for a charger with a friend while they had a loaner Taycan... I'm really not interested.

But this. This is compelling. It's interesting that the startup electric manufacturers are making stuff aimed for the enthusiast while most stream car makers are stepping away from them. They see the hole and are mobile enough (or maybe not overly burdened by committees) to make a move to fill it. I like that.

Even lowered, it could still use some tastefully rad skirts to visually lower the body over the battery. If needing to downsize the tire diameter to not screw up geometry too badly, deeper flares could be used to fill in the gaps.

I like the form factor, it's actually interesting as-is, and pretty cool as-photochopped.
