http://www.racer.com/american-le-mans-series-names-scca-official-grassroots-motorsports-partner/article/204785/

Racer Magazine said: The American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón is giving Sports Car Club of America members unique opportunities to experience its professional sports car racing efforts through an official partnership naming SCCA the “Official Grassroots Motorsports Partner of the ALMS.” The venture is intended to serve as a platform to recognize SCCA members who positively contribute to motorsports across North America and provide an opportunity for ALMS fans to see how easy it can be to transition from enthusiasts and admirers to participants, according to both organizations. “The partnership between ALMS and SCCA is a very natural one,” said ALMS President and CEO Scott Atherton. “The majority of ALMS fans are auto enthusiasts, many of them wondering how they can become more involved in motorsports at a grass-roots level; the SCCA is the ideal place to start that journey. Similarly, we believe SCCA members have a deep appreciation for our sport and hope all of them will take full advantage of the fan-centered opportunities the ALMS offers.” Starting with the next round of the series at Lime Rock Park on July 9, an outstanding SCCA member will be recognized during each ALMS race broadcast live on ESPN3.com and on subsequent ESPN2 or ABC telecasts. That member will then be profiled on the SCCA and ALMS websites. “The American Le Mans Series represents the highest level of sports car racing in North America through its world-class competition and cutting-edge technology,” SCCA President and CEO Jeff Dahnert said. “It's the type of competition that many of our members aspire to, and featuring the new SCCA Star Performer in each of the remaining ALMS broadcasts will be a tremendous honor for several of our members.” In addition to mutual cross-promotion at events, on respective websites and through social media, SCCA members will be kept up to date on the latest ALMS contests and sweepstakes with additional SCCA member incentives under development. A heavy emphasis will be placed on the ALMS season finale, the 14th Annual Petit Le Mans Powered by Mazda, and the 2011 SCCA National Championship Runoffs, the SCCA's premier road racing event.

I read the whole release and am still not quite seeing the opportunity "transition from enthusiasts to participants." Are they talking about volunteering at events? Because they sure as hell aren't giving us all license to drive in the ALMS.

So we'll see some (not Grassroots) SCCA Pro drivers in the bottom ALMS classes? Not getting the synergy here either, and you'd think the SCCA would realize what "Grassroots Motorsports" means...

Yeah, let's just say that the release was a surprise to us, too. I believe the award is now known as the SCCA Star Performer.

I would think Grassroots Motorsports would be the only official "Grassroots Motorsports" anything.

I'm assuming the guy who pretends to be your lawyer ('cause you certainly don't have one on retainer) has given them a call. I'm betting David can fake the best lawyer.

No, you're doing it wrong.....tell the SCCA they can keep the name, so long as they remove all SCCA branding/logos and replace them with GRM logos.

True story, David worked in a law office for a couple of years.

I see what SCCA's doing here. If I had a dollar for every time some guy in a crazy expensive street car pulled up behind my Corner Station at an IMSA race, took a cooler full of high-dollar beer out of the trunk, and say to us over the fence between sessions, "..man, I wish I could go racing!"..I could probably buy the LeGrand.

These folks had never heard of amateur racing. At all. Hell, half the time they'd never even heard of SCCA (we still constantly joke about the "Secret Car Club of America" ). We didn't recruit them all, but over the years, we've helped a lot of spectators make their way into the sport. I remember once back in the 90s (when Improved Touring cars were so cheap), I told one guy what I spent to pick up my my ITB Golf & get through my first two schools. His eyes just beamed like lasers, and he said, "AWESOME! I could get that next week just by selling my berkeleying boat!" Heard later from a buddy of mine in CFL Region (who'd been working with me IMSA weekend) that he saw the guy at their Sebring Drivers' School later that year.

We've been doing this on a personal level for years. Sounds like someone in SCCA HQ finally got the bright idea to make it official.

The two are not mutually exclusive...
