I sure hope the guys who agree with Dean (the OP) never go into the medical field.
All we use is acronyms: TID, BID, QD, PRN, PO, D/C, gtts, NKA and most of those are based in Latin.
It's not that difficult. (Shhhhhhh... its ok to learn new things.)
Acronyms take the first letter of each word to make a phrase shorter, for example, General Motors is often shortened to GM, and Grassroots Motorsports Magazine is GMM and Greatest Racing Machine is cut down to GRM (that's why you see that one so often here: "FWIW, the MkVII FiST is the GRM, OMHO LOL")
If a thread is too acronym rich I just let it go, prolly ain't meant for my input anyway.

So who is going to update the GRM Wiki page for the typical acro-speak?
- E30
- E36
- XJ (Cherokee)
- XJ (Jaguar)
- NA/NB/NC/ND
- ...
I know right?!?!
I have to actually READ the first post when a thread has "XJ" in the title to know if it's a Jag or a Jeep.

What does the N stand for in these anyway?

It stands for Miata and the first body style was the NA then when it got fixed headlights it was the NB, NC was the completely updated body, and the ND is the just released one.
It actually is part of the vehicle identity number (VIN). That's were a lot of the chassis codes come from.
The AE86 is actually part of the VIN for the rear wheel drive 1980's Toyota Corolla made famous from the Japanese drift cartoon "Initial D".
Another thing people could do is spell out the term for its first occurrence and then use the acronym for subsequent occurrences.
For example: "I heard the last SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) autocross was awesome. The SCCA seems like a nice bunch of people."
... And we can have an itty-bitty quiz at the end of class (don't worry, it can be scaled so nobody's feelings get hurt).
Should we hand out candy or stickers for participation?
When complaining about feeling left out is more appropriate than 45 seconds of research, it makes me a bit concerned.

I have an FI NA. If that doesn't make for some online confusion, I don't know what does.

Having your own gas station seems like a pretty nice perk...
Fuel Injected first gen Miata.
Nice, you'll fit right in here!
(Unless you're talking about the pelletized cattle implant containing Trenbolone Acetate?)

Forced induction first gen Miata
I too sometimes get a bit confused with the acronyms. After all, I am an old guy. I have to read the thread to determine what is being talked about. That's the way I learn. Some still confuse me though. But you should see the acronyms we use at work. Military (army) has a bunch, then there are the ones we use for systems on our helicopters. To compound matters, sometimes the acronyms change for different models of the same aircraft on the same component.

MSM means something entirely different depending on if you're speaking with a Miata enthusiast or the Red Cross.

Ya I got the Miata part and the whole generation thing. But specifically the "N" what does it mean or represent? Pulled form the Vin? Engineer mispronounced the cars name when telling the assistant to write it down? Assistant just abbreviates on the mispronounced name and it becomes legend?
Just curious.

VIN identifier. Just like RX-7 is "F"... except for the first series (partial generation) which was SA in the US, and all three series of 1st-gen were SA in the rest of the world because they didn't require 17-digit standardized VINs yet, which is why it became the FB starting in 1981 in the US.
And RX-8s are FEs even though they are not RX-7s.
What's it mean? It's the letter they picked for the model, nothing more nothing less. Just like Imprezas are all "G" cars (GC, GD, etc - second letter denotes generation AND bodystyle, a GM is the same generation as GD. I think) and all 4x4 Chevy fullsize trucks are K and all 2wd compacts are S.
Means nothin', it's just what got assigned.
Be thankful you did not spend years in Telecommunications as middle management.
Over this years I offered CDMA then UTMS which switched to GSM then worked for a company that was iDEN but after buyout switched to CDMA.
Most of my days I spent competing against MVNO's but what I cared about most were ARPU churn and OIBIDA.

I don't mind the use of acronyms here, although it does create some amusing moments when I accidentally use "GRM-speak" out in the normal world.
Just ordered an upper ball joint from V8 Roadsters to replace the one I destroyed.

That still would not cover the confusion of talking about a MazdaSpeed3 fitted with MegaSquirt3.
Most people when talking about MegaSquirt3 seem to typically be talking about it as equipped with the expansion board, which is required for sequential injection/ignition among other things...In which case it would kill two birds with one stone by simply referring to it as MS3X.

In reply to Knurled:
That's my understanding. Mostly it only means something to whomever picked it for the VIN either at the factory (?)or at a government body that hands them out(?).
Then there's stuff like the Mustang Fox body stuff. I believe that Ford used that name as a development code word for the chassis project. Much like the 'Panther' chassis was used for the Crown Victoria and her sister vehicles from 1979 until their demise in 2011.
The engine codes are sometimes printed right on the engine or on a placard somewhere. Toyota was good at putting on the valve/cam belt cover.
Any guess to what the alphanumeric code this is?
