Now at 160K and yes I finally changed out a part, replaced the rear dampers with some KYB Gas Adjusts, much improvement.

Still using the OEM brake pads.

Oh yeah, put the Summer tires and rims back on it.

Ordered parts today, second set of plugs, cabin filter and first set of brake pads.

Still no failures with 176K on the clock.

what a pile of crap. TWO sets of spark plugs? That's unacceptable. I'd be looking for a lemon law buy-back.

What a completely boring thread

I'm seriously wondering why I'm effing with my Metro to get the same mileage with a fraction of the comfort and convenience. I'm going to go price check these things locally.

Almost 190K now, I am driving a couple of days a week now, which means instead of 1500 miles around 600 weekly, the car is still running fine.

Yes it is a boring thread.

Oh yeah and the brake pads are on the shelf, still haven't installed them, trying for 200K now

Tried to make it to 200K on the OEM brake pads, fell 10K short, nothing else is showing any wear at all. All this mileage in 3.5 years.

I have slowed down a little, only 196K at this time.

Got the interior cleaned professionally, after just 4 years of ownership there was about a gallon of coffee in the driver's seat alone.

What is your fuel economy like at this point?

I average about 40 mpg, have had no mechanical failures, have done Mobil 1 oil changes every 7500 miles, one cabin filter, 2 sets of plugs, 1 set of brake pads and a pair of rear shocks.

So 200k+ with zero mpg drop? That is great! I may need to look hard at this for my next commuter. The Insight doesn't fit a baby seat so well.

40mpg is not a given with these. They got rerated to 38mpg and my 2013 GLS 6speed has gotten 35mpg average over 40k miles of about 90% highway. I'm not complaining but don't think 40 is a slam dunk. My onboard MPG gauge is routinely 41mpg and then math at the pump drops it 10% to 36. Overall mine has given 40k trouble free miles.

I don't quite hypermile it but I do drive for economy in this, its the only challenge left, it is slow, in its own time it can stay at any reasonable speed all day but it takes its sweet time getting there.

Otherwise I have constantly returned 40mpg in the warmer months and a few less at 37 during Winter.

Interestingly it gets better at 73 than it does at 68mph

Automatics are significantly lower MPG from what I have heard.

I get the rebate for Hyundai re-rating the car, yet I do get 40 mpg, hehehe

Doing the math at the pump depends on two variables which I believe can vary quite a bit from fill up to fill up. I believe the car calculation is probably more accurate anymore (depends on the right size wheels and tires though).

  1. the point at which the pump senses your tank to be full and clicks off
  2. the measuring device measuring the actual volume of gas delivered to you

In reply to rcutclif: If you just use the fuel used (from receipt) and the miles covered (odometer) over a large number of tankfuls, it averages out to a very close result anyway

This. I don't keep a written tally but I have kept a running tally mentally for a long while. For the Forte (sister car to the Elantra) the trip computer is between 5-10% off reading lower than actual mileage. Only car I've ever heard of doing that.
