That is where I stole it from. Leaks on a boat lead to fires on a boat which leads to suffering.

Well more suffering then owning a boat.

Painting a rear diff is perfectly OK. The POR15 idea is even better. 

A few years ago I had a conversation with Andrew Nelson on the subject of painting a diff and/or replacing the cover with a chrome one. 

If I remember correctly - He was quite avid about keeping the stock diff cover as aftermarket ones don't have the inside contour promoting lubrication as many of the aftermarket ones. As far as painting - Dark colors only with BLACK preferred. Black helps dissipate internal heat. 

I have done my own research on this and found two references to the need of housings that contain moving parts being painted (one regarding engine paint and one regarding painting differentials) both recommend black. 

So - I'd paint it BLACK.
