I have a 2005 Tacoma Double Cab 4x4 and I need to replace the lower intermediate shaft between the steering column and the rack. The universal joint is clearly shot.

Part #8

On the surface, it would appear that all I have to deal with are three difficult to access bolts and some rusty splines. I've hit the exposed ends of the bolts and the splined shaft with a wire brush on a Dremel and I've soaked everything with penetrating oil for a few days. I'm wondering if I will be faced with any surprises when I try to get the old one out and if I can reasonably expect to tackle this in my garage with the truck on ramps.

Also, I know that there was a TSB for a steering column rattle that I haven't noticed (TSB-0119-10), but I'd also like to know if there are an other parts that I should replace while I have it apart. I haven't been able to find the part numbers yet and the online shop manual that I used to use is NLA.

not a Toyota tech... but do have a fair amount of exp with Toyotas...

The shaft should allow, once both ends are unbolted, enough room to slide it one way... off one end, and then it should come off in your hand..
